Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE), Canada's largest communications company, today reported financial results for the fourth quarter of 2009.
BCE, which includes Bell Canada, Bell Aliant, Telesat, Virgin Mobile, and the Source, reported a 3.9% increase in operating revenues and 12.8% increase in operating income, when compared to the same quarter in 2008, buoyed by strong growth in the number of wireless and TV customers.
Thanks in large part to the launch of its new wireless network, Bell added 163,000 new wireless customers (110,000 post paid and 53,000 pre paid) in the fourth quarter and 41,000 new television subscribers.
Digital Home readers will be most interested in the results of Bell Canada whose services include local, long distance and wireless phone services, high-speed and wireless Internet access, and direct-to-home satellite and VDSL television services and Bell Aliant which provides many of the same services in Eastern Canada.
Operating revenue at Bell Canada for the three months ending December 31, 2009 rose 4.8% from the same period a year earlier to $3.98 billion while operating income rose 10.0 % to $572 million.
For the entire year, revenue at Bell Canada was up 1% to $15.02 billion while EBITDA was up 1.4% to $5.72 billion.

Operating revenue at Bell Aliant for the three months ending December 31st fell 2.2% to $786 million from the same period a year earlier due to declines in local and long distance revenues. Despite the revenue declines, cost containment initiatives allowed the company to earn $366 million, the same amount it earned in the same quarter a year earlier.
