I have 2 9242's but I have not had any issues and have not had to replace the Hard Drive. I did read somewhere that it gives you more recording capacity, as the larger drives are written into the software for Dishet's equivalent receivers. If I can find it I'll PM you.

Its a 500 GB drive. Do I presume from everything above that even tho the 9242 ships with a 320GB drive, this 500 GB drive will function fine in place of a dead 320 GB drive? (I realize I'll only get 320 GB capacity once formatted in the 9242)
It will use the entire 500gb and increase the recording capacity. My google search for the ST3500830SCE turns up all "Out Of Date Item". Where did you find them?

Maybe this won't be as easy as I thought (should have guessed!).

Here's where I found a listing of retailers claiming to have the ST3500830SCE.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&q=ST3500830SCE&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=6980064019748737357&ei=5fC1TNuTHYGC8gaA7YiGCw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDAQ8wIwAg#

Of these, NextDayPC lists it as backordered. I placed an order with FuturePowerPC, but 10 mins later they sent an email saying they were out of stock and the item was discontinued. Currently, I have an order in with UpgradeBay. We'll see what comes of this.

They are also listed at Amazon, although ~ $280 for a new one.

somewhat related,

I have been given a 9242 to scavenge the Hitachi CinemaStar 320gb harddrive.

The drive does not even spin-up when plugged to a pc, I remember it was working in the DVR. (4 months ago)

It is possible that this drive is firmware protected ?

Thank-You

There is a way to fix that (low level format or something).

The issue is the PVR changes a setting that prevents it from spinning up until accessed. Once it's in a PVR, it cannot be used in a PC until that is fixed, as the PC needs to read the drive ID during POST.

I remember that happening to me, but it was about 3 years ago I tried it, so I cannot fully remember what fix was.

Two weeks or so on, nothing has come of my order from UpgradeBay - not even a credit card charge. So, presumably, despite promises, these drives aren't really available from anywhere.

Well my hard drive just crapped out on my 9242 and I've googled all the various drives that are supposed to work and I come up with zero... does anyone know what our options are now?

Call Bell, they are still offering a refurbished replacement for $150 I believe.

Like on the other post, my 9242 hard drive is not working anymore. My hard drive is a Western Digital, not a Seagate, model WD3200AAJS. A lot of them are available on the NET but I was wondering if the the numbers and letters (57RYA0) after the model number are important.

WD3200AAJS-57RYA0.

Thx

The numbers are VERY important....they must be an EXACT match to work with the 9242, in the case of the WD drives. Elsewhere, in this thread, I believe, are the model numbers of other drives that will work with the 9242. Search for "ST3500830SCE" and you should get more info. :)

OK Thx.

Well, can I replace a 9242 hard drive with a 9241 hard drive. I read somewhere that it could be done but not sure.

Thx

Was this list taken out of a firmware dump? If so.... I'll definately track down a spare drive to keep for a rainy day.

From the model #'s it seems the largest is 620, although some model #s don't have the size in them. Anyone know off hand if the 9242 will accept a 1 TB drive, and which one that might be? I'm thinking of upgrading both my receivers.

Thx.

If I recall correctly, it does not matter what size drive you install, the receiver can only use the predetermined amount of space, so adding a larger drive makes no difference to recording time.
