Hi, I couldn't find anyone else with my problem so here it is.
My TV was just upgraded from the old Minerva system to the new Optik TV setup. I still have my old pvr and stb (the silver ones) and the Dlink modem/router that I was given at my original install 1 year ago. The upgrade was done remotely so no one came to my house.
After the upgrade my internet tests are at 14 Mbps with the tv feed off so that is good, I used to be at 3 Mbps. My problem is that when I am watching TV it occationally loses connection and the internet and dsl light on the modem are off. After about 30 seconds it restarts and the tv resumes. I generally miss 1 minute of the tv show at a time. Really annoying. The same thing happens when I am on my PC. If I am watching a youtube video it crashes over and over again. Anytime I put demand on the modem it crashes. It doesn't crash with general surfing but if I ask it to download a file it crashes everytime.
My question is, should I just request a new modem or is there a setting I need to change?

There aren't any settings to tweak on the modem that would prevent it from losing sync. Call into Telus, they may be able to tweak the port but you may need to have somebody come out and replace the Dlink with an Actiontec.

Also, since nobody came out to the upgrade, you may have some older hardware or even improper configuration at your panel that may need to be addressed.

Shoota, you da man, AGAIN!

Shoota is correct, call in. There are issues if your service is doing that. It shouldn't and its not acceptable if it does. A tech visit will be required to resolve this. There are a couple of things it could be, but I won't even venture a guess without being there, and they are all things that only a tech with a truck full of gear can fix.

Update

So I called Telus yesterday and told them my problem. It took a long time to convince the person on the other end of the phone that I was actually losing my DSL connection. He just kept saying, "well if you are watching TV then your internet will slow down." I nearly smashed my head in the wall, but he finally saw the light. Said they would monitor the connection for awhile and that I should write down the time each time it goes down. Gave me a reference number too.

So to make it crash, I would download the same game from Steam over and over again and just like clockwork, I had it crashing about every 2 minutes for an hour straight. TV would freeze and DSL light would go out. So that evening I called Telus back again and told them the problem along with my reference number. After going through the same song and dance about how the internet wasn't just slowing down, I finally got transferred to someone in solutions. That guy told me it was something wrong with the wiring outside my house and they would send a guy out in the morning. That was last night.

Tech showed up on time. Comes inside and I procede to show him what I do when it crashes. Of course, it would NOT crash for me. Not even once. Murphy's Law. He starts to tell me how when you have TV feeds on, then the internet will slow down and that was probably the problem.
I just look at him.......

So after explaining once again that it is not just slowing down, I am actually losing connection, he tells me that he will just get the Actiontec modem and maybe that will help. On his way back into the house he notices my tele communications box outside my house. Says he has never seen one like that for 10 years! So he replaces that and told me that he was surprised I was getting any connection at all with that box. He gave me the new modem and after hooking it up he left.

So I have been trying but I can't get it to crash yet. Hopefully it is fixed and it was just that box outside.
I will post again if it starts crashing again, just in case someone else is having the same problem.

Thanks.

Sounds like it was the protector, which is inside the box. Generally the box doesn't need to be replaced but some of the older boxes don't hold the new protector properly.

Some older protectors can add a ton of attenuation which would drastically impact your max attainable train rate.
