On January 17th Shaw enabled the ability to have remote SMTP access.
It will work with PC / Mac mail clients, iPad / iPhone, Blackberry, and Android. Customers must go into the webmail beta site (wmbeta.shaw.ca) and enable their mobile access (turned off by default) under the Mobile Access option in the Preferences tab.

Customers will then have to set up the options on their remote devices using the correct incoming and outgoing mail servers (pop.shaw.ca for incoming and mail.shaw.ca for outgoing) and email address/password combination.

Is this for mobile access to webmail so that it is easier to manage email from a mobile or is it just an easier way to access @shaw email?
Previously to send @shaw email from a mobile you had to use the outgoing server of the cell provider (from shaw.ca ...."Shaw's outgoing mail server is only accessible while connected to the Shaw network. If you are setting up a mobile device which will be sending mail while connected to a network outside Shaw (e.g. Wi-Fi hotspot, cellular), you will need to use the outgoing server name associated with that network.").

No this is not access to webmail. Rather it allows you to send mail through the shaw mail servers no matter what internet connection you are currently using. This will allow you to have much more freedom and less hassle having to reconfigure servers info all of the time when switching between different connections.

Interesting.

I wonder what mail server my blackberry was using before this then.

How does RIM check the Shaw email and how often do they do it? Do they have servers at Shaw that does that?
BIS logs into Shaw's incoming mail server to retrieve your messages. Outgoing mail from your blackberry would be sent BIS's SMTP servers, normally na.blackberry.net or something like that.
