Red Hell

My hard drive in the 9200 started to make a whining sound all of a sudden.
I tried a short HDD test from the memory dump screen. It said there is an error trying to read the disk and hung there.
Pressing the power button in front of the unit has given me the 2 flashing red lights. Somewhere in this forum I read that the flashing red lights mean it's trying to reformat the drive, but after a few hours I don't think that's happening.
I have tried hard reboots with cables off and back on, always with the same results (flashing red lights).
If the machine is indeed trying to format the drive, will another drive (lots of discusion here on that) will fix the problem?
Does anyone know how to get out of this flashing loop?
I read somewhere in this forum that you should have your machine in dual mode when you are trying these tests (mine wasn't).

How to remove daily schedule?

Will any of the memory dump options discussed remove my daily schedule list? Lets just say I have reasons to not want everyone who turns on my TV to see what I have recorded and subsequently deleted.

Is there some other way to do it if this doesn't work (other than smahing it)?

It does work, but depends on the underlying problem. It is certainly worth a try.....as your options are limited.

re format loop

Hello again:) ok my machine reset over night (12 hours approx) and was working again w/o hard drive ... but I turned it on with select button... forgot to do hard reset 1st ... when I turned off with power button and turned back on , back to red lights loop... so guess I'm waiting another 12 hours or so?
Now I want to get this right this time so Q.? if I see red lights out 12 hours from now do I unplug and do hard reset before doing anything else or should I also wait the full 24 hours?

GRRRR, well lights went out did hard reset now lights back!!! Can't win:(

Really Need some help Here:(

Lights went out after about 12 hours(well stopped flashing went solid red) did hard reset now lights back flashing, streamed for days now and installed new Segate hard drive from list of compatibles won't get out of flashing loop with or without hard drive connected!!!
Can't access menu to do dump? Is there anyway to clear and reset this machine,
I don't understand how doing a diagnostic or reset can kill it? It reset without hard drive hooked up before and worked just had the solid red lights ..I would of not turned off or reset ... would of left alone but post said to do another reset to clear lights now seems its Screwed?
I read on the dish site it will reset clear errors at 2 3 and 4 am (But will only do once)! I think that's what has happened So Is there nothing can be done but send to provider for replacement at $175.00 I just spent over 100 on the new HD.

Solution

Great site, just recently found it. For those that are in a flashing 2 red light loop due to a HDD problem, and don't want to wait 12 hours with the HDD unplugged for the receiver to respond, so they can access there menu, plug in a usb memory stick to the front panel usb port with the 2 red lights flashing. It works with the internal HDD drive plugged in or not plugged in. A windows pops up on screen asking you to configure the new media found. Just cancel, and than you can get into your menu. Do a clear NVRAM as described in #1 post in this thread, than remove power for at least a minute. The 2 red lights will continue to be on, until you do this. The problem with your receiver will still be there after reboot, but at least the tv functions work minus pvr, until you either replace or fix the internal drive if no warranty and you own it, or wait for a 9242 replacement to arrive from bell if under warranty or you rent.

Thank you Bungee, that worked great to get rid of the flashing red lights. Now if I can find someone with a disk that would work in a 9200 I would be all set.

Hi bungee regarding your information on insterting a USB memory stick would this work on a 6141 receiver to reset it? We have a receiver that is screwed up (keeps rebooting with no picture when done rebooting) and can not get into the menu to check signal strength. When pushing menu the first screen comes up but can not get deeper into the menu, message pops up saying select external decoder when any other button is pushed. Unit just stopped working one day, no HD or decoder was connected at any time. Thanks
