I had a 3100, a 5800 and a 5900 in the house. Thinking of going HD. Question, if I get a HD receiver, am I allowed to sell the 3100 or the 5800. There are quite a few for sale (at decent prices) on certain famous auction sites. Not sure if Bev allows that anymore.

Edit by 57 - 2011.10.25. You should not sell or buy 9200 or 6100 receivers since they are being phased out and BTV will not activate them. See link below for more on the topic: (They can still be used for OTA so they may have some value to someone interested in that option)

Sorry but saying;

DO NOT purchase any 6100's or 9200's
Was and is 100% wrong, as I said.
Pinza, that is what I like about this Forum.
Everyone gets to say their opinion, and from time-to-time, we stand corrected.

Unfortunately, I cannot edit my earlier post, so I will correct it here.

If you plan on purchasing a 6100 or 9200 to use as a Bell HD receiver, don't because they no longer work.

If you plan on purchasing one to use as an OTA antenna tuner, they will work for that purpose.

Thanks,

purchased a 6131, turns out it's a rental unit... now what?

As you can see, newbie to the forums! I have a question for all the experts out there... I recently purchased a 6131 receiver off ebay. turns out the unit is a rental unit, and cannot be activated on my existing account. In order to reclaim my money from seller via paypal and ebay for the fraudulent sale of this receiver, I had to send the unit back to seller. I got my money back and all, but the seller refused to pick up the rental unit, and the unit was sent back to me, to which I had to pay for the return shipping. My question is now what do I do with this unit? Call the police and report it, or hand it in to Bell?
It's owners responsibility to return the receivers not yours. I can't see the police being too concerned about it. Call Bell and see what they say, if they do not want to take them back dump them.
No clue what Bell would do in this situation, but if you explain the situation to them they may just send you a pre-paid box to send it back in.

BEFORE! you buy another receiver on EBAY run the R Code and the S Code by BELL first!

FYI.
Great advice but not all Sellers on E-Bay will release the R00 & S# before payment, I know I never will again.

I sold a 9200, several years ago and listed the numbers for people to verify with Bell that it was free to be sold. Someone, ironically in Manitoba, added my 9200 to their account and that then resulted in me having a very nice silver boat anchor.

I am sat holding a receiver, active on another account. There was programming for about 10 days, then nothing. Yes, I know enough people at Bell, I most likely could have done something but it was not worth the risk on their part so I never put them in that position.

If I list receivers now, which I very rarely do, I only release the Receiver and Card details after payment. If that is not good enough for the Buyer, oh well, at least I do not have a boat anchor again.

Check the feedback of the seller, that is a good way to gauge his practices.

R00 is enough to verify status yet not enough for someone to steal it as happened to Pinza.
I thought Bell required a call from the seller before they would add it to the buyers account. That's what happened to me many years ago. They would not add to my account until seller called them.
Better than a couple installs I had. Customer goes I bought these at Value Village. They don't have any smart cards but you can make them work right? Don't you guys carry piles of smart cards? *sigh sigh sigh*

Now I don't know about you but I don't recall ever seeing such things at Value Village but if that is the case they got no business dealing in them.
I can't say that I've ever seen any satellite/cable receivers at value village, but they do sell electronics (mostly older TVs, VCRs, CD players, etc)
In a local Value Village to me, they had about 10 or so 9200's in February when I was in there.

I spoke with the store manager and explained that they were no longer any use for Bell TV but made great OTA HD PVR's. He was very understanding and even made a new sign to put in front of them, advising this fact to potential buyers.

That was a pleasant change as most times people just do not care.

@peano, very good point, I should have mentioned that fact, only the R00 is required. Thanks
Pinza, do you recall how much the 9200s were selling for? If it wasn't too much it would almost be worth it to pick them up just for the hard drives.
Well, as listed for Bell TV, they were asking $225 each. After my intervention, they dropped to $75, I said that might work but if they were not selling to drop to $50.

I left him my e-mail addy, he told me a week later that they were keeping one in the Store to show off the TV sets they were selling and he had hooked up an OTA antenna.
I have found a 9241 receiver that I'm interested in purchasing. The seller says it's new in box.

I should ask for the first few Smart card #'s to confirm that it is good and also the first few receiver #'s. Is that everything?
All you need is the receiver number.
Thanks Pinza!

There shouldn't be a problem with them giving it to me before I purchase, right? I can't activate it with just that #.
Right you just need the receiver number to call Bell to verify it can be activated and to make sure it's not a rental receiver
I deactivated and removed a couple old 2700 recievers and they no longer show up on my account. I guess I should be able to go buy a new HD reciever and add it to my account online now. Anyone tried adding a reciever yet.
Sure, it is the easiest way I know to add receivers.
