Procedures for Buying and Selling of BTV Receivers - See Post 1

I had a 3100, a 5800 and a 5900 in the house. Thinking of going HD. Question, if I get a HD receiver, am I allowed to sell the 3100 or the 5800. There are quite a few for sale (at decent prices) on certain famous auction sites. Not sure if Bev allows that anymore.

Edit by 57 - 2011.10.25. You should not sell or buy 9200 or 6100 receivers since they are being phased out and BTV will not activate them. See link below for more on the topic: (They can still be used for OTA so they may have some value to someone interested in that option)

Yes the 6 receiver limit is the "official" maximum. They do allow certain customers to have more and they do forget to remove some as well, leaving more than 6 on accounts.

Even dosborne appears to have 8 receivers with 9 Tuners on his account, unless some are stacked in his closet.
Ex Agent brings up a good point. Is this receiver on a Rental Contract.?

If not, he needs to call Bell and tell them he sold the receiver to you and then it should be possible to add it to your account.
I am sure you know that the 3100's in the closet will all require new Smart Cards to be activated.

I am NOT sure if there will be a charge for these cards after the cut off date.
Depending on the S04 # that is written on the Receiver, a Card may NOT be required.

Please supply S04** and I will let you know, I do not require ALL the numbers.
Giving the receiver # will alow the other person to contact Bell and verify that the receiver can legally be sold, so it is an understandable request. They should not need the Smart Card # as well. It is worth noting that the card should start with S06, if it does not, you might be as well getting that changed before selling the receiver.
Even if the 6100 comes with a Card it could still be the older version and you will then have to wait after activation for Bell to ship out a new one. Takes around 5 to 7 business days.

For the Card to be valid it needs to begin with S06*********.

If this is your first venture into Bell HD, do not forget that you can get a free installation...
If that is the Card from the 5100 it CANNOT be used in any other receiver. Well technically it can but not for normal customers.

You will need to contact Bell to have them ship out a Card for you.
Have you got the receiver.?
Have you tried it in the Data Stream.?
The 6100 originally had an internal Smart Chip, if the # in Sys Info, match's that Chip, then I would think it will be a Free Card.

If you connect it can you see Ch# 198.
No you should see 198 all the time, unless the New Card had been used and then not supplied.

On the bottom is the S00# that was with the receiver when new, does this # match the details in Sys Info. Menu 6, 1, 3.?
Unless is starts S0459, this range is compatible with Nagra 3.
Well basically you need to ensure that any receiver you buy is actually able to be activated on your new Bell account. First step, before buying is to get the receiver # from the seller, then a call to Bell should tell you if you can put that receiver on your account or not. It is also worth asking for the Smart Card #, although I can understand why this would not be given in full by the seller. I would never give out the full #. You need to ensure that the Card starts with S06 or S0459, if NOT then you will need another Card before activation, which could be a pain.
My experience with Bell would say that the unit has a 12 month warranty from date of first activation.
The person selling the receiver (or the person who's account it is on) needs to call Bell TV to tell them they have sold the receiver, only then can you add it to your account.
Only other way is if you know someone inside bell that is willing to loose their job to put it on your acount.... Not worth even asking, in my opinion.

As Barter says, sell it, get a new one.
I think Roman Centurion, is either a Bell CSR or was one because so much of the posting is typical Bell CSR confusion......lol

If the Smart Card starts with S04 it is the last generation of Card and will be replaced free of charge, when and if you can get the receiver onto your account.

Being registered on an account does not always mean that it is also active on that account. For example, I have over 15 receivers on my account but only 5 are active.

More than likely the previous owner had already told Bell that he was selling it.
There will be no charge for the new card.
Yes, or if the card is not the last version but a much earlier one.
If they are "new/never activated", I do not believe there will be a charge.

I would also be checking the Smart Card #'s and contacting Bell with both receiver and card #, to see if they are legitimate. The prices are very low.

If that cards start with S04, you will have to activate and then wait for Bell to ship new Cards before you can watch anything except the few free channels.
