A few days ago Google rolled out Cloud Printing for GMail for the US only but I have successfully set this up on my iPhone using HotspotShield on my phone and Chrome beta. I can print on my wifi network and from the 3G network.
Once you have the print link on your phone you no longer need to have the VPN on.
Setting up Chrome is easy going to >options>under the hood and at the bottom of the page you'll see Google Cloud Printing, click to add your printers.
Almost nothing works yet, but in time they hope to enable all of their apps, including Gmail and Google Docs, and I believe somehow support 3rd party software like Microsoft Office as well, I'm just not sure how.
