Porting a number in contract

My contract with telus is up in October, but I am leaving in August to move to Europe for a few years. ThE ideal situation would be to port my current number over to voip.ms for the time I am in Europe. If I port the number over now I assume the account at telus would be cancelled and I would be charged for breaking the contract.
Is there a way to port the number but have telus not cancel but switch to another number that I can forward the voip number over to for the time being?

Any help is appreciated.

My advice.

Be honest with Telus and find out if you can cancel early without a charge. They might cut you slack if you had something proving you were moving to Europe.

If that fails.
  • Set up a new account with a new telephone number with Voip.ms
  • Forward calls from your existing Telus number to your new VoIP.ms number
  • When your Telus contract ends in October, port your Telus number to Voip.ms
  • Cancel your new VoIP.ms number and keep your old Telus number with VoIP.ms
