In two broadcasting decisions handed down yesterday the CRTC has approved applications for new English-language FM radio stations in Prescott and Port Hope Ontario.

In Port Hope Ontario, the federal regulator approved an application from Small Town Radio to operate a not-for-profit community FM station controlled by its board of directors.

The station, which will be expected to adhere to the regulatory framework for campus and community radio stations will broadcast with an effective radiated power of 700 watts from 89.7 FM.

Small Town Radio says the will broadcast 126 hours of programming per broadcast week (18 hours per day), of which 112 hours would be station-produced programming and 14 hours would be acquired programming, primarily from other community radio stations. The station’s programming would be a mix of spoken word programming of interest to the local community along with a selection of popular and special interest music.

Port Hope is a municipality in Southern Ontario, about 100 kilometres east of Toronto and about 150 kilometres west of Kingston.
