I'd like to know who has gotten AC3 passthough to work over HDMI?

I'm not talking about HDMI audio or even multi channel HDMI LPCM audio. What I'm after is sending an un-decoded AC3 bit stream from a Windows program, say PowerDVD, though an HDMI cable and successful receiving this signal at the TV and/or receiver.

Please post what video card, drivers (video and audio) and OS you are using.

Ultimately I'd like to be able to send AC3 over HDMI to my TV and then send it out to the receiver where it would be decoded. I understand that most TVs do no offer AC3 passthough. An alternative approach is to first send both video and AC3 to the receiver then then to the TV.

Thank you.

I have an Acer Revo connected to a receiver using hdmi, and i'm 99% sure i've played content that had AC3 audio... but I have to check to be sure.

AC3, dts are nothing. Of course they can be bitstreamed via HDMI.

Almost any discrete video cards with HDMI can do it. AFAIK, none of the onboard ATI video chipset does any HDMI passthrough if that's what you're wondering.

Also, HTPC -> TV -> AVR is the wrong connection as mentioned. The optical output from the TV is surround only from the built-in ATSC tuner.
