I did a factory reset on my Galaxy S6 but I am able to retrieve the data with free data recovery software. This scares me out, lol.

How to completely wipe the phone without damaging it? I need to exchange it for some extra money.

There are a number of secure wipe utilities in the Google Play app store. Just pick one with decent ratings and try it.

I've used Secure Wipe and Secure File Delete in the past. Neither requires root access.

The problem is that most of the apps require root access.
I guess that depends on how much you want to wipe. The above apps work on the user storage space. Not sure what else they leave behind. I usually use Secure File Delete to get rid of sensitive files, then delete the rest of the files, run Secure Wipe and reset the phone. Never checked to see what could be recovered. I try not to keep anything sensitive on my phone so it's not that big an issue. Passwords are kept in a cloud based file manager. Without the master password those are inaccessible. App settings are kept in the cloud but someone would need to access the same Google account to retrieve those.
