Don't seem like routers with a USB port do that good of a job and the Airport Extreme little pricy, how else to turn my USB drive into a NAS?

There are other routers and devices that can attach a USB drive to a network. D-Link, Linksys, ASUS, Netgear and other makers have them. The D-LINK DNS-323 2-BAY Gb NAS is on sale quite often and has a network interface built in.

little NAS

I picked up a small NAS Dongle at Futureshop for $45 and it works great, just plug in the USB drive, (you will need to reformat) and plug the other end into the Ethernet cable on your network. I believe you can put up to two drives on this little device. Uses a simple web interface to program it.
Enjoy.
