So will Global actually be broadcasting HDTV OTA, or is it just for the cable/satellite providers now? If so, what areas will be covered?
I've got my "Flying Arrow" aimed at the CN tower right now and my OTA set to channel 65, the channel Global was said to be using in Toronto. Still waiting for the Global HD signal to come alive today. (Oct 11th) Lets see if they can do it!

As for all the simsubbing..... they can't do that to you if you have your own OTA antenna.

Take it from a pro.... Don’t use silicone on asphalt roofs... use proper roof tar. Tap with a hammer and locate the joists... bolt into them for stronger support. Make sure tripod is level. Ground everything.

Great pics, and excellent attention to detail, especially the grounding. That looks like AWG 8 cable you used? Did you go with a custom ground rod or did you connect to the house ground?
HDTV101 I just finished installed my 4228 and took your suggestion and got a tube of roof type black tar sealant.

I put the sealant where the base was going to be mounted and also the the threads of the screws.

After the install I coated the around the screw and base where it was attached to the roof. :)

Will post the pics later tonight. :)

To post pics, when making a post... look for a little yellow box in the top center with a mountain in it. Click on it and another box will open. Past you pics url in this box and click ok.
Nice Antenna!

So no grounding wire???? You have to get me the name of the fearless installation crew as I may need an antenna installed in Markham soon.

Please post such info in the stickied thread about equipment and installers. We're always looking for that kind of info.

Glad those big hydro high tension wires are way behind you and not in front.
Rod thanks :) call me if you need help :D

Yes Stampeder those hydro wires are a good 1/2 mile away and luckly behind. :)

We normally do satelite dish installs on the side of the house or chimmney, so we are used to installing but not on the roof. :D

I tempoary used a grounding block from the coax and a ground wire connected to a copper 4' pole that I drove into the ground.

Will run a 12 gauge wire soon is that really necessary ?

It's not just about a direct hit from lightning but during and before a storm the air becomes charged with ions and they will collect on your antenna... if it's not grounded to earth the charge will build up and once it gets large enough it will sporadically discharge down your coax. This can and will damage your receiver... you must ground the mast! Also a gas filled discharge unit should be on the coax too at the ground block.

Read what these Hams say!

That’s AWG #6 copper! It's bonded to the Stack on the roof with a copper strap you can see if you look closely at my first set of pics at the top of the page. From there it travels directly to the basement where it bonds to the 3/4 inch copper main water line. The Furnace Stack is also bonded here again directly to the water pipe.

Coax Cables all pass through gas filled discharge units and ground blocks that bond to the same point on cold water line.

Cable TV and Bell Telephone grounds bond with main Electrical ground at service panel.

Main Electrical ground bonds to water line below meter. Since I tided to cold water line down stream a ground jumper MUST be placed across meter because it's brass. It's good practice to place a jumper across water meter anyway to give your home a better overall safty of the "Faraday's Cage" grounding effect..

My monster antennas and my monster trees Pt. 2

Continued from this post:

The reason for me wanting to use that big, natural antenna mast was because the south property line is taken up by three 50 foot Red Cedars blocking the way towards the SeaTac area about 105 miles to the south:

So now I have the best VHF/FM and the best UHF antennas anyone could want, but without a 60 or 70 foot tower on my south property line I'm basically out of luck for SeaTac stations:

Such is life, but then again I do get the local analog and digital stations, and Mrs. Stampeder and I are thinking of moving to a more rural environment some time in the future so I may actually get to use that big CM1111.
