Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium announced that over 7.3 million viewers watched Alexandre Bilodeau triumph in the Men’s Moguls on Sunday, making it one of the most-watched sporting events in Canadian history.
Coverage of the event peaked at 9.7 million viewers with 37% of the population (12.3 million) watching some part. More than 1.3 million French-language viewers watched on V and RDS.
Overall tuning to the Vancouver Olympics has been very strong with the consortium saying that 26.5 million Canadians watched some part of the Olympics on Sunday with five million tuning in to see Kristina Groves win bronze in the Ladies 3000m Final.
Ratings for Canadian stations are particularly high in Vancouver where ratings are about 25% higher than in Toronto, Calgary and the national average over the first three days of the Games.
The top five sporting events over the weekend were Freestyle Skiing: Men’s Moguls (7.3 million), Long Track: Ladies 3000m Final (5 million), Biathlon: Men’s 10km Sprint (3.3 million), Figure Skating: Pairs Short Program (3.2 million) and the Nordic Combined: Individual NH/10km (1.8 million)
