For those who have success getting channels out of Plattsburgh, you will be glad to know that...

So looks like there may be one more ATSC station coming on the air sooner than later that you may be able to pull in...
Remember CHOT-TV at channel 40?

WFFF Burlington VT reduced they're ERP to 47kW!!!

I hope i'm mistaking, but WFFF has filed a new construction permit and reduced they're ERP to 47. A look at they're new coutour Map show that Montreal is now excluded.

Can anyone prove me wrong, please.....
I want to watch this channel!!!

thanks

I think all hope is not lost just yet... their contour has sufficient overlap into Quebec that Montreal and area would be in the Deep Fringe/Deepest Fringe zone, so it will take some good OTA gear to get it. Also, 47kW might sound low but in ATSC it is a respectable power. Too bad they made this decision though!

Joedornan: It looks like Starchoice is the only way to go for you if you can't get Burlington... Even SRC/CBC would be a stretch since they're broadcasting off their building, on the other side of the mountain.

Expect Delays with Burlington VT Station Construction

Some not-so-good news:

Our friend Yipikyer has reported on AVS that construction on Mt. Mansfield construction will NOT be able to start as soon as weather permits. They have to wait until late June until a bunch of stupid BIRDS make babies! While construction was said to be going "ahead of schedule" last year, there seems to be still no chance of getting the estimated on-air testing dates moved up from late fall to late summer.

Here's the thread (scroll to the bottom):

Not good news from WPTZ-DT Burlington for Montrealers

Engineer at WPTZ Channel 5 emailed me that the transition to Digital OTA is going well and they should be on the air in the fall but he doubts that Montreal will catch his channel because the transmission towards the north of vermont will only be at about 10% of what the rest of the state will get. I believe that this is mandated from the CRTC.

WPTZ-DT Channel 14

Hi Ettisl, here's the official FCC contour map for WPTZ-DT Channel 14 from just east of Burlington, VT:

So, judging from this map, it looks like Montrealais will need deep fringe or deepest fringe UHF gear to receive it.

Right now, WCFE emits at 100 kW

WPTZ will emit at 650 kW. 10% will be 65 kW on channel 14.
WFFF will emit at 47 kW on channel 43.
WVNY will emit at 10 kw on channel 13. (near channel 12's 325 kW)

Wich one will be the hardest to capt???

WETK will emit at 90 kW
WCAX, if they don't change, will be at 801 kW on 53

you can see a more detailed map of WPTZ on recnet.com

Yipikyer, when did WCFE go to 100KW? I thought they were at 7.5KW.
I am sure that I picked it up when they were 7.5KW.
Does this mean that maybe we will pick them up?

For WPTZ, don't panic. The map used shows the contour at 48db! That's more than what is actually needed. I think that only 15db is needed for a lock. Plus, WPTZ will still have the highest power of all. WCAX will reduce power after the transition as they move to channel 22 (somewhere around 400kw I think).

Dd 5.1!

Last night, PBS HD had 4th of July celebrations in HD with DD 5.1. Cool to see my setup working this great (and to see that Mountain Lake PBS has 5.1)

After that date will we still need a VHF antenna or could I install only a UHF one?
Unfortunately, WVNY-DT (ABC) will be staying on channel 13 (VHF), meaning that it will probably be difficult to receive with just a UHF antenna.

I bought a UHF-only antenna and a single cut-to-channel 13 VHF antenna to be certain.

No. It's the frequencies occupied by channels 59 to 69 that the FCC wants to take back and allocate to other services (that's why WCAX is forced to leave channel 53 post-transition). Low-VHF (2-6) will likely be abandonned voluntarily because the interference on these channels makes them inadequate for digital. High-VHF, however, (7-13) will still be very much in use. In fact, many stations are fighting among themselves in order to get these "beachfront" channels.
