Global sends the SD channel for the benefit of cable companies without a direct fibre link, so that they can receive an appropriate 4:3 version of the channel in the short term.
I've heard that it is not they intention to maintain this for the long term.
Canadian rules for sub channels re different than the American ones. Once an American station has an ATSC license, they can do what they want with the sub channels, as long as they maintain Educational/Instructional quotas on each channel, and they pay the FCC a cut for any third-party data services that they carry. In Canada, subchannls need to be specifically licensed by the CRTC. So far, the only subchannels licensed in Canada is the
CFTV-DT in Leamington, and community-based repeaters like the
Logan Lake TV Society in BC.
For Global to air anything other that the SD version of their main channel, they would need to get a separate CRTC license for any sub channel, which I imagine one they might apply for someday. (Or more likely, launch a mobile ATSC version of the main channel, which again would not require a separate license.)
