Corus buys Canadian rights to Oprah's OWN Network

Oprah's 'OWN' coming to Canada
Corus Entertainment has purchased Canadian rights to OWN - The Oprah Winfrey Network - which means the TV channel eventually will be available in Canada as a specialty service.

OWN is set to launch in the United States on Jan. 1, 2011. Corus wasn’t specific about a Canadian availability date, but indicated it would be “early 2011.”

Womans Network is being rebranded OWN

Source Please?

I seriously doubt it will be W Network. It is an established brand. It will either be VIVA or Cosmo TV.
And more than likely Viva as I mentioned before as did cartt.ca.
Corus will need to be careful with VIVA because the CRTC is already questioning their current programming and how it adheres to their license conditions.
what about the Can-Com commitment
Shania Twain is apparently getting her own show on the US version, that should count for enough CanCon:D
They just need to substitute American paid programming for Canadian paid programming and other cancon and they should be good to go, or perhaps throw Cityline on it.
Paid Programming does not count as cancon. Required Cancon programming comes from various programming caregories and the amount from each category varies by license.

So 100 HUNTLEY STREET and all the other church programming Global airs daily - does that qualify?
CosmoTv

CosmoTV wouldnt get rebranded. Its more likely will be W TV cuase OWn is suppost to be gear to womans.s It makes sence. aLL THEy do they can ADD another channel.
Viva is also geared towards women as is Cosmo, so your point about W means nothing.
I was just looking at the properties that Corus currently has. Its either W be rebranded or W Movies Be rebranded as OWN.
There will be no rebrand of channels. Its due to the Launch of the channels in HD in Fall 2010 is to launch YTV and W Movies in HD in the fall.

I haven't heard anything about W Movies launching in HD, but I would think W would launch in HD before W Movies. Anyhow, they just rebranded W Movies and aren't likely rebranding that one or W because of that new W Movies brand. The likely rebrand as i've stated before and as cartt.ca stated is Viva.
Press release this morning:

TORONTO, Nov. 9 /CNW/ - As announced today at an upfront presentation to advertisers and agency clients at Corus Entertainment's Toronto headquarters at Corus Quay, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will launch in Canada on March 1, 2011, following the U.S. premiere January 1, 2011. OWN is a multi-platform media company designed to entertain, inform, and inspire people to live their best lives.
...
To promote the channel prior to the launch, W Network and VIVA will air nested blocks of OWN programming throughout January and February. Offering a strong mix of OWN shows, the nested blocks will provide audiences with a sampling of what OWN has to offer. On March 1, 2011, OWN will launch in over six million Canadian homes on what is currently VIVA
I'm surprised VIVA has 6 million subs? I could see W network having that many as its a basic service, but I thought VIVA was a Digital Channel?
It's included in packages. I think I sub to it but have never watched it.
I knew Viva would be the one getting rebranded. I'm guessing they might go to the CRTC to change some of Viva's conditions which is why it's not launching until March, but I could be wrong.

Viva is available on digital basic on Shaw and probably other providers so there are lots of subscribers.

You could be right about that because they are in hot water with the CRTC due to the fact that VIVA used to be CLT and is licensed as an educational service. I am guessing they will have to overhaul this channel's license which means completely change the nature of service but whether the CRTC agrees to that is another story.
They'll probably just go ahead with it anyway. VIVA seems to have strayed from the original license, not to mention the numerous other networks that would appear to be in violation.
