If anyone out there likes OPERA - "The Live at the MET" broadcasts from the New York Metropolitan Opera to Movie Theatres everywhere is great entertainment for a (relatively) reasonable price.

They do the LIVE broadcasts ... but then they also re-play the Opera's at a later date in what they call "ENCORE" performances.

I saw "Don Pasquale" *LIVE* broadcast at the Movie Theatre w/ ANNA NETREBKO et all ... a month or so ago .. and that was awsome.

Really good - if you like OPERA.

Man ... that ANNA NETREBKO is quite the performer ... she sang so well ... and she ACTED ! the role so well. I was laughing and snickering all through the show - at her ACTING! and ANTICS in her role ...

Very Very entertaining ... and the audience at the Movie Theatre loved every minute of it!

I see there is an ENCORE performance of the Opera "DON PASQUALE" at the Movie Theatre's tomorrow - Saturday Dec 11, 2010 - usually at 1 PM Saturday.

If you have any interest in OPERA ... go see the ENCORE of Don Pasquale tomorrow ... with ANNA NETREBKO ... et all ... they were all great performers.

That recent opera got great reviews ... and I can add mine ...

Don Carlos is playing tomorrow. Don Pasquale's encore is on January 17th. But yes, great value if you like opera.

OOPs. Sorry I messed up. Ya. It was Don Carlos on Sat Dec 11, 2010. (long. 5 hours. starting at 12:30 EST - but they usually have at least one 20 min. intermission - enough time to take break and walk around a bit)

And yes ... the Encore for Don Pasquale is scheduled for Monday January 17, 2011 (6:30 PM EST). [ But that's good ... you have more time to plan to see it ... if you like.]

Ya Seriously(!) - double check what I write ... sometimes I am a little "out of it" "out in space".

Yes - Double check with your LOCAL Theatre listings and schedules.
[ to see if your LOCAL Cineplex Movie Theatre is actually showing the Opera(s) you want to see ]

See online too, on the internet, the Cineplex Movie Theatre future listings and schedules:

It was on PBS ! (recent Opera "Don Pasquale" @da MET)

(!) WPBS - Public Broadcasting actually showed that recent OPERA ... (!)

Don Pasquale - that recent (NOV 2010) live performance from the MET that I wrote about ... above.

So now I have a nice recording on DVD too !

(they played it a couple times - once again later at night ... awsome PBS ! )

Still - catch the ENCORE at the Theatre if interested. Good. I like.
[better yet if you understand Italian - se capischi l'Italiano !]

Yes, English subtitles.

(In Quebec, probably French subtitles, I'm guessing if you see it in the province of Quebec ... probably other language subtitles too because I think they play these in movie theatres around the world.)

Not sure of the sound format OTA over the air - I recorded off analog cable.
(Stereo on Analog cable I'd bet). So my DVD recording is SD stereo.

Likely 5.1 on WPBS OTA on the HD digital channel ? ch 16.3 from Watertown NY. (I could have watched OTA, in Kingston, but only via a digital OTA convertor box. I don't quite have a full home theatre setup.)

In the Movie Theatre? Must be 5.1. The "Live" showing is transmitted in HD via sattelite, they say, to all the Movie theatres.

Sound and picture are great on the big screen at the movie theatre.

Should check exactly what they mention on the theatre website.

RE: The MET Opera Live in HD - at Movie Theatres

Cineplex . Com / Events / MetOpera

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions - Technology

http://www.cineplex.com/Events/MetOpera/FAQ.aspx#technological

Q. Will there be subtitles?
A. There are on-screen subtitles for all transmissions. These are the same as the Met titles you see when you come to a live performance at the opera house. In most instances, the subtitles are provided in English. Spanish subtitles will be provided in Latin America; French in France and Belgium (select locations) and German in Germany and Austria.

Q. How is the sound managed?
A. Our broadcasts are engineered and delivered to movie theaters in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound to accommodate most movie theater systems. It is the next best audio experience to being in the opera house itself.

Q. How does high definition look different from a movie, and how is the Met transmitting in high definition?
A. Feature films are typically shot on 35 mm film. The HD broadcasts are shot in high-quality video for a live performance. Video looks different from film on any size screen.

Q. Does the Met use a different camera from what it uses to record for PBS? How will the broadcast translate to wide-screen?
A. HD is the format used for wide-screen presentations. Since the Met is shooting in HD, the broadcasts are compatible with wide-screen. PBS will downgrade the presentation to standard definition for television, but will also present the original broadcasts on their HD channels.

Any idea of the audio format being used? Full surround? Do they provide subtitles too?
Caught part of it on PBS HD on my Shaw Direct, and the audio was a superb Dolby Digital 5.1. Really nice clear vocals with lots of good timbre, plus very good ambient sound and echo in the surrounds.

Picture was superb too - nice hue and color, sharp withour being overly aggressive or processed. In general, one of the nicest telecasts I've seen in some time.

Thank you Scooter. Awsome. We have real confirmation from a viewer with a good setup - that this Opera looked and sounded great on PBS-HD, in 5.1.

I should have mentioned ... on PBS ... this OPERA was on the PBS program called GP - Great Performances.
(and the Cineplex website said something like "PBS will play the Operas 60-90 days after the live performance" ... so stay tuned - possibly more to come.)

Great Performances usually comes on PBS Wednesday nights around 8 PM in our area. They do all sorts of music and performance and arts programs.

Wed nights seems to be music and performance night on PBS.
( plus Saturday & Sunday Night - a few shows - ex Austin City Limits round 11 pm Saturday)

But OTA PBS has a few subchannels now ... so sometimes they'll play or re-play different stuff at different times on a different subchannel.
(So you gotta check the schedules).

Tuesday nights on PBS seems to be Science and Documentary night.
(NOVA, Frontline, etc.)

Sometimes I'm watching stuff later at night- OTA - that I missed earlier - but just on a different PBS subchannel.

So the OTA subchannels are allowing some time shifting, and re-playing of great content !

Now all we need is a good HD recorder on the market ... and burn to BLUE RAY disc.

Anyway ... if you enjoy Opera - this is all AWSOME.

2011 / 2012 Schedule

I picked up the 2011 / 2012 schedule on a hard copy paper sheet in the movie theatre.

Typed it into EXCEL, and then sorted it by date. Output to text file, edit abit, and now, posting here.

No guarantees. Always check with your local theatre and on the Cineplex website.

The schedule can change over the season, and there might also be mistakes or errors - never know.

Anna Bolena (Donizetti).

[ Italian with English Subtitles - Costumes and singing were great. ]

( ! Opera story of Anne Boleyn - Wife of King Henry VIII - I did not know till I saw the Opera. )

The recent 2011 Opera performance, recorded from the MET Opera, was broadcast on TV, over the air, on PBS over this past weekend.

Sat Sun Jan 21 & 22, 2012.

I watched much of it very early on Saturday Morning on WPBS... but dratts ... it would have been a good one to record and save.

They replayed it Sunday Afternoon, on a couple of different PBS affiliates.

The PBS program name is: Great Performances

Keep an eye - they may play it again - and I think they may play other Operas.
