I don't think a different antenna would give you more channels, but I didn't think you would get so many local channels in your basement with one little window.

not much snow here in downtown toronto
and no snow where i am testing the antenna outside my fire door which allows a coax cable to pass
it's about a 30 foot coax cable

metal 'porch' is above me

antenna is on same side of building, as inside location, and only a few feet away, but outside

i rotated the antenna [still outside] 90 degrees and re-scanned
got 22 channels !
but

4-1 no signal
5-1 720p
7-1 no signal
7-2 no signal
7-3 no signal
9-1 1080i
11-1 1080i
17-1 1080i
17-2 480i
17-3 480i
19-1 1080i
23-1 no signal
23-2 no signal
25-1 720p
36-1 1080i
40-1 1080i
41-1 1080i/ no signal
41-2 no signal
43-1- 480o black screen - audio only - opera
44-2 no signal
47-1 1080
57-1 1080i/ no signal

will some sort of 'amplifier' help pull in usa channels ?

since the 'channel file' is erased each time i scan, i think i will stay with this channel list even if atmospherics don't let me watch certain channels

thx for all the help and recommendations

@ macspectrum, you will get better results if you raise the antenna higher. Not sure if your allowed. Even if its on the second floor or the attic, if you have one, should improve reception.

@macspectrum , you really should ditch that antenna. I'm surprised someone else hasn't chimed in yet, but Digi**** stuff is trash. I can almost promise you you'll have much better results in your situation with a C2 from my experiences in your area and situation. I've actually tried that exact antenna given to me for free and it got tossed in the trash immediately. Even a 4 bay Channel Master (on sale at save and replay for $39.99) should destroy that thing.

The Costco Digiwave ANT2086 Super HD ATSC Off-Air Antenna
seems to work pretty well for macspectrum and it has some good reviews on the Costco website.

I am surprised it picks up so many channels inside the basement apartment!

i do not get 22 channels inside

inside and 8 feet below ground level i get

cblt
cfto
chch
tvo
cblft
chjt? - the christian stn from hamilton
global x 2
cfmt
city

the antenna is less than 1 month rent from rogers/bell
and
no contract

# of stn does depend on atmospherics

I wouldn't be so quick to trust Costco reviews. Many of them likely come from first timers who view any reception at all as good. I could personally pull in a couple dozens of channels with it. But I can also pull in a dozen channels with the end of a cable touching my metal window frame. There are scores of well reviewed indoor antennas that have been proven by those here in the know to be garbage. Best Buy reviews, amazon, etc.

The fact that he's getting decent reception in his basement at his location isn't that surprising to me given his proximity to the CN tower and some of the flamethrowers from buffalo like CW, etc. Theres lots of signal, even in a basement around there. The build quality of that particular digiwave and it's similar electronic master counterpart are a complete joke. The elements on it are so flimsy even moving it around indoors causes them to flex and completely throw off performance. I'm going on my single anecdotal evidence here, granted, but there's no question in my opinion.

My original advice stands, mac. A Clearstream 2V would likely be your best bet. Aim it away from the CN Tower towards buffalo, the Toronto channels will come in almost by default given the beamwidth of the 2V. IMO it deals well with multipath when it's attenuated being behind concrete, lower elevations, etc.

It's an easy antenna to move around, it's small and durable.

In my basement, furnace room to be exact, I get all the Toronto stations and WNED with a set of rabbit ears.

I tried also a Kross 4 bay with the same results.

I own the common Terk indoor antenna you see in these threads. If possible, I'd like to get WBBZ and WBXJ (and WBXZ if I'm really pushing it). Would the Clearstream 2V get me what I want?

Here's what I get using the included amp (I get significantly fewer without):
2.1 (+ subchannels)
4.1 (+ subchannels)
5.1
7.1 (+ subchannels)
9.1
11.1
17.1 (+ subchannels)
19.1
23.1 (+ subchannel)
25.1
26.1 (+ alternate feed)
29.1 (+ subchannels)
35.1
36.1
40.1
41.1 (+ alternate feed)
47.1
49.1 (+ subchannels)
57.1

This is my TV Fool report.

Dan, I get WPXJ and WBXZ with the Clearstream 2 (dipole removed) and a preamp indoors, and I'm not far from your location. Our TV Fool reports are similar.

HOWEVER, it took me a LONG time and tweaking with height and aim in my apartment. I'm aiming at WPXJ through a concrete wall, an entire 1 bedroom apartment, and the exterior brick wall of the building. I've tried every square inch of my apartment. I get WPXJ 100% 24/7 stable with ~28 average SNR, and WBXZ 99% stable @ ~20SNR. An inch either way and I lose both completely.

It IS possible, but not likely. Larger antennas (DB8e, etc) have proven useless for me as I cannot position them precisely enough to even lock signal. I believe it's layering in play for me.

I get WBBZ with a c5 with an FM trap and a 3410 preamp, but the c5 is mounted outside my window (not exactly allowed as a renter, but no complaints so far), but it is ALWAYS at the digital cliff, (breakups in wind, heavy traffic, cat farting near the window) unless tropo enhanced.

IMO WBBZ is not worth the effort, nor is it possible indoors, and certainly not with the C2V dipoles. YMMV

EDIT -

You're a little further off the lake than I am, but a little closer geographically to the transmitters. Your proximity to the CN Tower might kill your chances, but then again, if you're high enough up you might have some success.

For reference, TV Fool that's my report.

I get:

2.1 +subs
4.1
7.1 +subs
5.1
7.1 +subs
9.1
11.1
15.1
17.1 +subs
19.1
23.1 +subs
25.1
26.1
27.1
29.1 +subs
35.1
36.1
39.1
40.1
41.1
42.1
47.1
49.1 +subs
51.1 +subs
56.1 +subs
57.1

67.1 +subs partially unstable

I should note that it takes more than one antenna for me to accomplish this because of aim. All of the U.S. channels are coming off the C2V except for WBBZ (67), coming off the C5. For Toronto and Hamilton I'm currently using a 4 bay 4221 clone.

Outdoors, with the right gear, you might be able to replicate that. Indoors, it'll be unlikely.
