HDTV reception in Belleville, ON

I live in Belleville and have been pursuing the Holy Grail of OTA HDTV for
about 3 years. Currently I have a 4228 and a 8275 on a 6' pole on the roof
and a SONY 34HD-2 TV. HD Reception is limited to FOX 31 and a couple of
PBS from Syracuse. There are occations when the heavens open up and
10-15 channels are available but that is rare. Anybody have a similar experience?

any OTA in Kawartha Lakes?

Has anyone had any success in getting any OTA in Lindsay, which is approx 50km north of Bowmanville? I am planning to get BEV HD but wondering if an indoor or outdoor ant would bring in any OTA.

Great forum for us noobs...

Yep, DT means Digital Television or Digital Transmission. Remember that the Industry Canada list contains present and future channel assignments. Right now if you can get Toronto DT stations that broadcast off of the CN Tower you will be doing great. If not, you won't be getting any digital TV yet.

Almost all the Peterborough stations on that list are local repeaters of the Toronto stations, which are only in analog today. That could take quite awhile for them to go digital. I think CHEX is still owned by Corus, but you can do a web search for an email address for them to ask what their plans are. I find that stations have almost always been getting back to me with an answer to my questions. Let us know if you try that.

Regarding getting the CN Tower stations reliably from where you are, I think you will need some deepest fringe gear if there are no hills in the way or if you're not in a valley. Anyone have better info?

HDTV success in Bowmanville, Ontario !! (Clarington area)

I've just installed a Channel Master 4228 antenna on my roof, along with a Zenith ZENRTR1 rotor, going into a Samsung SIR-T451 HDTV tuner.

SUCCESS!

I was going to be happy w/ 6-10 channels, but I'm happy to report that I'm currently at 22 channels!

Picture quality is amazing. Probably about 30-50% better (subjectively) than DVD. Oh, and I think it's actually BETTER than the supposed Bell ExpressVu HDTV images I've seen at Future Shop, Best Buy, etc., which are so full of compression, artifacts, etc. to my eyes [am I the only one who thinks all HD store displays don't look HD???]

Funny thing is I don't even have an HD display: I use a Studio Experience Matinee 1HD front projector (Sanyo Z1 clone) that has a " 1/4 HD " chip (Native: 964x544 Pixels). That's HALF the resolution of true 1080i HD.

I'm cancelling Starchoice Monday. After cancelling all our Bell phone lines last week, (keeping with Rogers mobile and adding Vonage VOIP), I feel GREAT!!

======
[And now -- because I hate it when I do a search, including pertinent terms, yet come up short because people's posts are full of "industry" abbreviations (what's up with " *C "?!), and lack "too obvious" details -- here are some more key words to help you folks get this valuable info: Durham, Oshawa, Courtice, Newcastle; rotator, SIRT451,SIR T 451, CM4228.]

Congratulations eyeQ with your success.
I saw Discovery HD channel at Costco
on plasma TV conected to ExpressVU HDTV receiver - the picture was
horrible compared to OTA, I actually could not believe it was HDTV.
Are you getting 22 channels including Rochester or just Toronto-Buffalo?

Congrats

Great job with your install and reception.

Definately OTA HD is better than the HD satellite. I find the next best thing to HD OTA is HD cable.

4-1 CBS WIVB 4
4-3 CBS WIVB 4
5-1 CBC

25-1 CBC
43-1 WNED HD
43-2 WNED SD
43-3 THINK B
53-1 CITY
66-1 SUN

B) These are freaky: the following I caught when my antenna WAS LYING DOWN ON THE ROOF (!), but now that it's vertical, I don't get them anymore (CAN ANYONE PLZ EXPLAIN?):
7-1 WKBW
29-1 Fox WUTV 29
29-2 Fox WUTV 29
29-3 Fox WUTV 29
21-1 WXXI

Bowmanville - lucky case of getting good multi-path

Hi eyeQ, those are good results from Bowmanville. I get all the same channels in Ajax, except I get WKBW & WUTV fairly reliably.

I also had the same experience the first day I got my antenna. I hooked up a temporary cable and threw the antenna on the roof. I had almost everything from Toronto, Buffalo and Rochester all at once. Over the next few days, while I collected all the stuff to put up my mount and mast, I found out they weren't that reliable, they would fade, disappear and return at will. What I had, I think, was a lucky case of getting good multi-path reception. When I got the antenna properly mounted, I found out i had a choice of Toronto, OR Buffalo, OR Rochester. I didn't want a rotor, so I bought a second antenna. The 4221 points at CN Tower and the 4228 points at Buffalo. FOX and NBC only drop out with really, really bad storms but mostly its reliable.
WKBW transmitter is almost 100 miles from Bowmaville but you'd probably get it reliably with a second antenna. You should be able to get ABC from Rochester on 59-1.
Good luck!!

OTA HD in Bowmanville

I have an RCA scenium HDTV and I connected an indoor amplified Indoor VHF/UHF/HDTV Antenna with RF Remote Control from Radioshack, which is mounted in my attic. The only HD signals I do not get is FOX Buffalo and CBC French. To get those, I hooked up an amplified RCA indoor antenna to the other coax input on the TV. I used to get the Rochester HD channels last summer, but none since the cold temperatures started. I suspect that the Rochester channels have reduced their power output.

You were getting tropospheric skip or ducting due to the hot summer atmospheric conditions, so you'll likely get them again once the hot summer weather comes back.

Curious if anyone has additional info on what I could expect 15 km north of Belleville?

What is the terrain and tree cover like at your location?
Mature (and tall! ... maybe 40 to 60 feet, mostly) deciduous and coniferous trees pretty well cover my 1 acre on the river. There's a ridge to the East (about 200 yds away, about 100 feet high). All the neighbours have extensive tall tree coverage. The fifty foot wide river to the west-by-north-west has tall trees along the other side.
General terrain is rolling low hills and flat farmland.

Thanks!

Just did a scan here in Whitby and am getting the same as you but additionally 8-1 WROC and 26.1 WNYB for a total of 28. My best so far was a few weeks ago when I was getting 30 channels with the addtion of 3-1 WSTM, 3-2 WSTQ, 3-3 WEAT, and 3.4 Tube but losing 9.1 CTV and 25-1 CBC-French. Too bad it doesn't last
