Audio Problems with 6100

I hooked up my 6100 the same as my 6000 except for the DVI connection.

I am using the Optical digital connection. On some of the channels I receive no sound at all. After spending an hour on the phone with Expressvu they finally figured out that not all stations will work in dolby digital. They suggested trying a RCA connection. Rather than do that I set the Dolby Sound to PCM only. This fixed the problem.

I find this rather strange since my receiver can detect the difference and everything worked fine on the 6000. The only other thing that could have happened is something went wrong with my receiver, perhaps the DSP chip is not working.

Anyone else have audio trouble with the 6100?

Another surprising thing, the CSR at Expressvu was excellent, she went above and beyond to try to solve the issue, the best service I have ever received. She did come out and say that they have received no training yet on the 6100, considering that she did an amazing job.

No ITV

I do not see any ITV channel, 275 on my 6100 receiver. I would assume that the 6100 can receive ITV.

When I press the ITV button on the remote it lights up and that is about all it does.
Im using an Optical cable for the sound on my 6100 and have had no problems. Does your Surround Receiver have an Auto Format Mode ? This allows it to change to any signal coming in on the fly.

As for your ITV issue. Have u subscibed to this channel in your package?
I read on a Dish Network site that audio issues are very common with the 811 model, Expressvu 6100 model.

It seems to depend on the optical cable and the type of audio receiver. Most people can only get it to work in PCM only mode. It is speculated that the receiver uses a weak or non-standard digital audio signal. It could also be a software bug and be fixed in later software updates.

So if you get Digital optical output to work on this model, it is pure luck.

If you go to Dbstalk.com they have lots of information on the 811 bugs.
DishPRO hardware:

Just to let everyone know; the 6100 will owrk with DishPRO lnb and switches but will show up as unknown and will not successfully pass a check switch.

I called ExpressVU and talked to a manager in engineering and she said that although they do collaborate on software with Echostar there is no guarantee that the same compatabilities will be unilateral between the 811 and the 6100.

They are aware that some of us prefer and do use Dishnetwork hardware that ExpressVU does not and they are looking to the future to develop a wider array of compatabities.

I also made them aware that the same 49% bug exists on some OTA channels using the OTA tuner as does on the 811 Dishnetwork receiver.

Purchased my new 6100 receiver @ A&B Sound in Vancouver today and after several technical problems which needed support calls to resolve, everything now works properly!

The hardest problem occured when the audio totally broke down after about an hour--on every channel, I was getting very choppy undecipherable noise. The support rep was totally lost & had no clue--but when a technical guy came on, we walked through different options until it was solved. Turns out that a 'receiver reset' got things working again. (this is done by depressing & holding the power button on the front panel for about 10 seconds)

:p I must say that I'm now very happy with the system & quite impressed with the video quality. (I'm using component video cable & set to 1080i)

my question now--is there a noticable difference in picture quality between DVI & component video? (is it worth the $100+ extra cost?)

thanks...

The short answer is: it depends on your type of TV. If you have a digital set (DLP, LCD, plasma) using DVI will keep the signal digital the whole way and you may see a slight improvement.

With a CRT-based set it may not help since the signal has to be converted to analog for display, either in your sat receiver or in your TV. I once tried a DVD player with DVI output on my CRT RPTV and I thought the result looked like crap compared to the standard component signal. Your milleage may vary.
I just bought my 6100 from A&B Sound here in Winnipeg last night, the setup went without a hitch and this receiver is so much nicer than the 6000 I was using. I like to see the Program Guide with info now not that stupis Info not available message I would get on so many channels.

The only thing I noticed was there is no search feature or Itv (channel 275) on my 6100. I thought it would be more like my other 2 3100's that do have the search at least. I think I am suppose to get Itv because I see the button on the remote I may need to call ExpressVu on that one.

Anyone know if we're suppose to have the search feature too or if it's coming?
I'm going to get my 6100 now from Bell World.

The optical audio better work! I'll be bitter if it doesn't.
There r a variety of different packages for the ITV button (Channel 275), this channel/button only works if u have subscribed to at least one ITV package.

I am subscribed to iweather and it works fine on my two 3100's but on my new 6100 the channel does not even show up in the guide.
the 6120 has no search feature?? that's ridiculous...can someone confirm/ refute this?
The 6100 along with Dishnetwork 811 are still expecting the OpenTV software to be downloaded as well as the search function.

Got my 6100 up and running... works like a charm.

I LOVE the new menu and no audio problems.
No audio problems wish I could say that.

I had some other optical cables around, however they did not work. To make matters worse the plastic around the opticial connector just broke away. Very brittle plastic, the cable stays in and do I get sound at least.

Well I asked them to send me a replacement unit. Since I destroyed the optical connector there is no warranty. Going to cost me $100 plus shipping since I caused the damage. I guess it is not designed to have a cable plugged in and out several times. Although I am not sure why the plastic is so brittle.

Maybe the next one wil work without any audio issues.

Overall I like the 6100 expect for some bugs. The worst is the toslink bug. I also can not get it to work with my VCR. I do a test, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work. Overall setting a timer does nothing at all. With my 6000 no problems at all. Also I find the OTA to be far worse than using the 8PSK module in the 6000. I read on another forum again this is a bug with this receiver including the famous 49% bug.

I guess it is just my luck that I have a 6100/811 receiver with every bug that has been identified already by Dish owners. I hope the replacement receiver is bug free.

These are all software issues inherent with all receivers so a replacement isn't going to act any differently. Future software upgrades will cure these problems. I can only see one channel in my OTA line up that suffers from the 49% bug.

As for the audio, set it to Dolby Digital/PCM and then perform a receiver reset and that cures it.

There also exists a bug that pops up when leaving your OTA channels and bringing up the guide causing audio loss. This also requires a receiver reboot.

I will tell you what I tell everyone else, if ya think you have problems with the 6100 take a trip over to the Starchoice forum and see all the nightmare threads about the DSR500.

The 6100 is a very stable receiver in my opinion much more so than the 6000 was in it's inception. The problems that exist are minor and will be worked out.

Yes hopefully software updates will work out the bugs.

I have attempted to do a reset as you mentioned without any luck at all. Still the same audio issue. My audio receiver is in Auto mode and it works fine in digital mode with my DVD. I have more than one optical port on the receiver and swtiching them around made no difference. I have as I mentioned which led me to damaging the optical connection several different cables. Still no audio when I set it to Dolby Digital. I have unplugged the unit for several hours, did a factory reset. Not much left to do except replace the unit. Although as you mentioned that may not solve the issue.

Mike,

Do you use the OTA functionality of the 6100? I am also in Milton and wondered how it was working? I currently use a Samsung T151 for OTA reception, but am thinking of buying a 6100 for both satellite and OTA reception.

Cheers,
Ian
Forgive me, but, what is the benefit of OTA? When I think of OTA I think of bunny ears and trying to tune in a channel that looks very fuzzy and sometimes won't even come in colour. :-?
