I am with Rogers (Ottawa area) but do not subscribe to HD. I want to add a PVR but Rogers tells me that the only PVRs available are with HD and that I would need to add an HD package to my service. This is not in my plans.

Are there PVR alternatives on the market that I can connect to my regular Rogers Box? I have a spare 150GB external drive; can I use this somehow?

I am completely new to this so any and all advice is appreciated!

You cannot use your spare drive. You could purchase a DVD recorder and connect it as follows:

However, there have been CGMS-a (copyright protection) issues in recording some programming:

You could build an HTPC, however, this is well beyond the capabilities of the average consumer. HTPCs have their own section in this forum.

You could get (purchase or rent) the HDPVR from Rogers - 8300HD or 8642HD. They don't have an SD PVR any more. You do not need to subscribe to any "HD package" only a digital package or fee which you already have if you have a STB. You would be able to record/see some HD channels as outlined in the following FAQ since they are "free". You would also get DD5.1 on these channels if that's of interest.

a) PC with tuner card, as mentioned above, and Windows Media Center (Windows Vista or 7).

b) Look for a used Pioneer 510 DVR or similar. Make sure it has NTSC tuner AND hard drive. Some of the recent players had hard drive for saving downloaded files, but no longer include a NTSC tuner.

I use both, but more-so the PC for dual tuner recording (Hauppauge 2250) and playback. I do not have my PC cabled to a big screen, but that is certainly possible.
