Hi all,

A friend of mine asked me to look at his computer as he said it wouldn't boot. In fact, it doesn't power on at all.

When it gets plugged in, the PS fan doesn't run at all. So, I disconnected the 20 pin from the motherboard and shorted the power supply at the green and black wire. The fan comes on then when it is plugged in. So the power supply seems ok.

When the 20 pin gets plugged back into the mobo, the green light on the mobo comes on, but that is all. The PS fan doesn't run and the computer will not power up.

Does this sound like a fried motherboard?

Thanks!

Not necessarily so. There could be enough power to drive the fan but not enough to operate under load or one rail only could be gone. The best way to test is to connect another power supply to the motherboard (20/24 pin + 4/8 pin) and see if it works.
