The latest incarnation of Doctor Who, the long running BBC produced British science fiction television program, is coming to Canada in April.

The new series, which premiered in Britain this past weekend, features Matt Smith as the eleventh Doctor Who and Karen Gillan as his companion Amy Pond.

The premiere of the show in Canada will air on Space on April 17th at 9PM ET.

In addition to a new Doctor and a new companion, viewers of the venerable show will also be introduced to various new villains and a redesigned spacecraft.

In the premiere episode of the new series, “The Eleventh Hour,” the Doctor takes Amy Pond to the distant future, where she finds Britain floating in space. Starship UK houses the future of the British people, as they search the stars for a new home. But as Amy explores the ship she encounters the terrifying Smilers and learns a deadly truth inside the Voting Booth.

Since the series began the Doctor has been played by eleven actors. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show as regeneration, whereby the character of the Doctor takes on a new body and, to some extent, new personality. Although each portrayal is different, and on occasion the various incarnations have even encountered one another, they are all meant to be aspects of the same character.

Matt Smith took up the role after David Tennant's final appearance in an episode broadcast earlier this year. Space will be rebroadasting the final two episodes of the previous season this coming Saturday April 10th at 9 PM and 10:15 PM ET.
