What's the best way to start watching? Do we have to go right back to the first episode? If not, where else is it best to start?

Stories are self contained but unlike a lot of sitcoms there are overarching plot points that you can't truly relish without starting at season 1 episode 1. And hey, when the comedy is that good, it's worth it to start at the beginning.

You *definitely* want to go back. There are lots of story lines (in the past) that help to explain the present character interactions, to say nothing of running-gag type things.
Yes, but the same can be said for any sitcom that has run long enough. It's not like "Lost", where you really would have no clue, if you hadn't seen season one. If I had to start now, I wouldn't bother watching The Office chronologically, but I would make sure I see all episodes eventually, it's really funny.

"Love Amarican Style" was a sitcom with zero continuity. You're right, most of them have *some* continuity but The Office has a lot more character development than most. You *will* miss more if you don't watch from the start.
