Hopefully these new WiFi Hotspots do a better job supporting all MTS customers as the current one at MTS Centre only works for MTS Mobile customers.

Winnipeggers will soon have even more options for wirelessly connecting to the Internet at libraries, arenas, recreation complexes and other popular sites. The City of Winnipeg and MTS announced today that they are partnering to offer MTS Wi-Fi service at community facilities across the city.
Starting today and over the next two years, MTS plans to invest nearly $2 million to bring Wi-Fi to 350 City of Winnipeg locations. MTS currently has over 400 Wi-Fi Hotspots throughout Manitoba including the MTS Centre, the largest Wi-Fi Hotspot in the province.
MTS high-speed Internet and Wireless customers can access MTS Wi-Fi Hotspots for free by entering their login ID and password on a Wi-Fi enabled device. MTS also uses a unique blend of technology to automatically transfer MTS Wireless devices to Wi-Fi when they enter an MTS Wi-Fi Hotspot, allowing customers to enjoy a fast and worry-free wireless Internet connection without having to log in or provide a password. Non-MTS customers can also connect to MTS Wi-Fi by using a credit card to provide payment.

non mts devices remembering password
I think MTS should make it so you don't have to keep logging in for example on an Ipad I always have to enter my credentials which can be annoying at times where as with Shaw it would auto connect! hopefully they make that happen sooner rather than later!

Didn't the city switch from MTS to Shaw last year? I remember there being a big press release announcement about it... Are they now switching back from Shaw to MTS?
As far as I know, Shaw never got around to replacing all of the MTS hardware that had been used previously in the city. They quietly scaled back their agreement at the beginning of 2013.
perhaps they will keep both Shaw and MTS at all Winnipeg facilities, I know a community centre in Winnipeg that had Shaw come out late last year and they did a site survey to confirm where to put the Shaw equipment and to this day it is yet to be done that was around late September early October last year
If I remember Shaw's deal correctly; it was non exclusive. I assume MTS will just occupy the same space as Shaw, offering their customers Wi-Fi as well.
Can anyone confirm that the MTS Centre has a significant wifi hotpot? But then when I do a search for wifi hotspots the MTS Centre does not come up.
Has anyone used this and does it have significant bandwidth? I have a week pass to Roar of the Rings and thinking of bringing my tablet with me that can connect to my slingbox. Thinking I can watch / listen to some of mic'ed up players online (yes I realize there will be a delay). The overhead camera shots will be helpful too.

MTS announced sometime last year a major wifi build at the MTS centre. While it was supposed to be open only to MTS customers, for some strange reason they made it open to everyone. So while there is a ton of bandwidth, when you get a full building and everyone is using it, it drops to a crawl. I can stream HD quality video from a slingbox no problem before a Jet's game starts, but once the game is on, and everyone is in their seats, I just turn off wifi as it is unusable.
For a big company trying to compete with Shaw and their "secured" wifi spots all over the city, you would think MTS would be smart enough to know that they have one location that Shaw can't put a hotspot, and take advantage of it, instead, they let their competitor's customers use it, and as a MTS customer I get screwed by the inability to use the service. So much for enticing people to be a MTS customer for wifi access.... Got to wonder who is steering that ship???

That's too bad. I guess MTS Centre fits the definition of "recreational facilities" and therefore the network is part of the subsidized grouping and open to everybody. MTS should consider offering a secondary exclusive network for its clients as well.

MTS Centre has two public WiFi networks, one is only for MTS Wireless customers on their wireless deivce and provides faster speeds, the other is an open "guest" network that anyone can use. I verified this with MTS support last year as I have MTS High Speed Internet which includes MTS WiFi access however I do not have MTS Wireless.
So CoryB, does the one for cellular customers show up as an open network? I know customers with an MTS internet account have to put in a username/password once connected to the open wifi network, but I don't think cellular customers have the same thing. I'm guessing it prompts for your cell number or account number?
As a side note, I don't know why I'd want to use a hotspot in such a busy place, since:
a) Unsecured wifi hotspots can be risky
b) I've tried speed tests on them and most seem to be the same as the HSPA speeds (or slower!) that I was getting.
c) I have a new LTE phone and it's probably much faster than the hotspot, unless they're on the fibre network?

Macman, I recall reading (probably somewhere in that press release) that the technology does not require MTS mobile customers to enter an ID/password. It automatically recognizes the phone as MTS and gives you access.
I've tried to use LTE in the MTS Center during a Jets game, and it's near impossible - the signal just doesn't make it through. If you are not on a MTS Wireless handset, at least in my experience, it will prompt you are a user name, password and PEAP certificate. The only way to get the PEAP piece is with an MTS handset unless someone else knows a trick I missed.
As for access, I find both the guest WiFi and HSPA to be nearly unusable at intermissions however HSPA can be used when the action is on.

This is the truth. I have been using my tablet all week at Roar of the Rings and even as an MTS high speed customer with an ID cannot get on to the MTS Wireless handset network.If you are not on a MTS Wireless handset, at least in my experience, it will prompt you are a user name, password and PEAP certificate. Having said that, the bandwidth has been awesome all week. Perhaps compared to Jets games there are less users of the network (ie - possibly a more "mature" audience) so speeds are a but higher than usual -- I am consistently getting between 800kps and 2Mps down all week with 0 dropouts. Awesome work MTS.

Can someone point me to a web site for signing up for the MTS wifi hotspot passcode etc? Asking through their website has gotten me nowhere.
maybe I can't get one; I have a landline and cell phone account with them, but no internet since they do not offer that here. Would be nice to have the wifi when I am in the city etc...

The wireless instructions don't really say so, but I think you need a smartphone and a data plan, i.e. you have to be an MTS wireless internet customer. - Enter your Password. Or, text the word Wifi to 6879 to have your password sent to you.
Actually, you have to either be an MTS internet customer or have an MTS wireless plan. We only have internet with MTS and my son uses his iPod to access the Wi-Fi hotspots all the time.
