starter needed?

All I want is basic and the HD programming and HD plus/ The dude on the phone said I must have the HD starter as well?? Also, now they make you pay $3 per box per tv instead of the one box for the whole house they had before. And...the phone pkg- am I reading this correctly? Either home phone with no long distance capability, or that $40 pkg. I switched over to Shaw a year ago, and am looking at coming back to MTS- but they don't seem awfully inviting!
Anyone who can add some clarity to this- many thanks!

@DonnieB_1, you can see the MTS themes at www.mts.ca/hdtv. There is also a PDF of the brochure you can download if you want.

There is a Free HD theme. If you want anything beyond that, you have to get the channels in the HD Starter.

The first HD STB is included in the price. Each additional HD STB is $3/month which is pretty reasonable compared to the competition. You can have up to 6 HD STBs that all have access to the Whole Home PVR. The old Classic TV STB only supported 3 TVs and wasn't HD-compatible.

The $40 phone package includes unlimited Canada/U.S. long distance and 4 features. If you get the basic phone package you can make long distance calls at the regular rate. I've got the "Home Phone Essentials" package which gives me reduced long distances rates and caller-id (including on my TV) for $27.

MTS also has the free wireless plan if you have all the other 3 services.

Thanks Dave. I cannot find the "home phone essentials" on their website.
Thanks for the info on the HD. Now hopefully they will offer a killer deal to come back!

DonnieB_1, I had to ask for Home Phone Essentials by name to get it. I think its an unadvertised loyalty offering.

Price increase - AGAIN

Looks like MTS has raised the price AGAIN.

I see that Basic +11 is now $65.99 (up from $62.99)

I never recieved notice about this.

I saw on the last letter I got from Shaw (wanting me back as a customer) that if you sign up with them that they will hold (guarantee) their price for 3 years (for personal TV, home phone and internet).

It's been $65.99 ($62.99 + $3.00 for HD set-top box) for as long as I've had Ultimate (going back to March 2010). I just got the bill for this month and they have a notice that says the monthly price of TV will increase by $3.01 effective May 31, 2011.

I haven't seen a TV price increase announcement on my bill yet, but I did see a $1.05 increase for internet bringing the unbundled price for Lightning to $47 effective May 1. Still a couple bucks cheaper than the competition's unbundled price.

Unfortunately, these annual price increases seem to be a fact of life with all the providers. The last one was Jan. 2010 according to this MTS thread.

@Hydrant Mike, Shaw's price guarantee only applies to the Personalizer Plan and not the other plans. It also doesn't cover Shaw's Theme packs which are currently $5 or $10 each. Most of the comments in the Shaw forum say that TV in the Personalizer Plan is more expensive than the old plans.

I'd like to see MTS put in a price guarantee for triple-play customers to compete with Shaw.

TV Price Decrease - SHOCK!

My last MTS bill had a notice that effective May 31, my TV price will decrease by $1.99. I had to read this 3 times. I have Basic + 3 themes, so they must be reducing the price of the lower-end packages. In my opinion the old pricing would penalize the customer that just wanted a few themes. Presumably, they're adjusting the prices to be more level.

Hmm, I'm trying to figure this one out. I have Basic + 11. Do you have the Movies 5 pak (Movie Central package)? The only other thing I have is G4Tech TV for $1.99. Maybe they're either increasing the price of the Movie package or forcing me to pay for the rest of the Information package. It was a vague message on the bill: "Effective May 31st, 2011, the regular monthly price of your TV service will increase by $3.01. You can change
your TV Channels or packaging at any time at mts.ca/tvchannelchanges".

I just have Basic + 3. I got a similar message with a decrease of 1.99. Shaw just had an increase of $3 on Basic so I assumed that MTS is doing the same thing in your case. I thought they might be reducing the cost of the lower theme packs since they were overpriced on a "per theme" basis.

May 2011 Price Changes

Code:
     Basic	Basic+1	Basic+3	Basic+6	Basic+9	Basic+11
New $41.50	$45.00	$49.00	$56.50	$64.00	$69.00
Old $40.99	$45.99	$50.99	$55.99	$60.99	$65.99
Change$0.51	-$0.99	-$1.99 $0.51 $3.01 $3.01

Prices include 1 HD STB rental.
MTS raised the price of Basic by 51 cents and adjusted the prices of the theme groups so that the themes average out to $2.50/theme if you buy them in the suggested groups.

Additional Digital Theme Groups after Basic+11 are still 2 for $5/month.

An individual theme is $3.50, whether it's your only one or you're adding an extra theme to the suggested groups.

The downloadable brochure and the on-line "Change my channels" software say the first theme is $3.50, but the web page still says $5. I guess they forgot to change the web page.

I'm contemplating on switching back to Shaw after just 3 months with MTS $89 12-month promo (Basic+9 themes, Internet and phone) after being told about Shaw's $98.99 (promo 908 or 968) 3 year guarantee for Basic Cable + all HD Channels (except for movies), 50Mbps Internet (with 400GB cap) and Basic phone (with caller ID)... Comes with their new gateway hardware and 2 portals (which is mine to keep after years, since the price is actually $85 + $14.99 monthly payment for the gateway and 2 portals)...

I used to be with MTS' 12 month promo ($80) last year and included a lot of HD channels but the current 12 month promo is $89 (includes only 1 extra STB so I had to pay extra for the 2nd STB) and less HD content...

I want to stay with MTS, but the 3 year offer I think is hard to ignore, specially since I hated having to switch from MTS to Shaw every year just to get the promo price... Are there any MTS offering that would counter Shaw's deals?

HD Starter a Requirement

Is there a technical reason why MTS makes me subscribe to HD Starter before I can add any other HD package? I honestly don't want/need any of the channels in that package. Has anyone had any luck getting them to remove this requirement, assuming anyone has asked? I just don't see $6/month worth of value with that package.

And I want to know if I'm missing anything; is there anyway to pick one HD channel like you can pick an SD channel?

Thanks,

Kelly

The Ultimate TV brochure says:

You must have the digital equivalent of HD channels in order to receive them in HD, with the exception of HD Hi-Fi, HD Hollywood Suite and HD Timeshift.
Is there any MTS doc that nicely maps each HD channel to its digital equivalent and/or digital theme group?

I don't think there is, but it shouldn't be very difficult to figure out.

Eg.
CBC Wpg: SD 2, HD 416
CTV Wpg: SD 5, HD 453
CityTV Wpg: SD 8, HD 417
Global Wpg: SD 12, HD 455

Those are off the top of my head. I install this stuff every day :) I should go to bed now
