If you are still experiencing the problem (or think it has improved) please post the first four lines of the system info from your STB so we can better track if this is specific to a certain client version.

I don't think the TV2 client version has changed since the Whole Home PVR was introduced. I've had the same version since my Jan. 2010 installation. Telus also has the same version.

Yeah, I'm going to assume it's still the same. When they rolled out whole home pvr, my work had to ship back their current stock of STB's to MTS to be re-flashed. I guess they do it that way instead of the customers house because updates take a long time which would greatly increase installation time.

Their original training material states that the first step should be to get the 2wire going and temporarily plug in all the STB's to it so they can do their thing. I've only experienced a few STB's that do an immediate update where the two cogs appear on screen and it takes about 20 minutes :mad:

I was hoping that with the update that included the Caller ID, the issue of the picture freezing while watching recorded shows on the non-PVR box would be over. Sadly, it is not.

If you hear of an update coming to correct this issue please post.

The issue with playback of recorded programming to the non-PVR box is a wiring issue, at last partially. Both the PVR and non-PVR box can run on coxial (round connector) and CAT5 (square connector). I have had my boxes running at one point in every combination except coxial to the PVR and CAT5 to the non-PVR. In every combiniation except CAT5 to both boxes the freezing issue occurs.

My speculation is that the CAT5 has higher bandwidth between the boxexs. In PVR playback the content is buffered into the non-PVR box in advance of display on the screen. When you skip forward the buffer has not had a chance to fill up and it pauses while waiting for the next frame to be sent across the wire.

As this is likely entirely limitations on physical items, ie the non-PVR box, your wiring, etc. I do not think this will be solvable by a software fix.

I get the freezing/stuttering issue, too, on the bedroom PVR, soon after fast forwarding using the 30 second jump fast-forward button. However, after some tinkering, my husband found that fast forwarding using the manual fast forward doesn't freeze up the PVR. So there's a tip you guys can try out. I'm curious if it's the same for everyone.

Plum, yes that seems to be other's experiences as well. It seem that the problem is the skip button, and regular fast forward is fine in most cases.

Am having problems with the stuttering playback when I am watching a recording on the 1216 and my wife wants to watch a recording on the 1200 at the same time... the 1200 skips and stutters every 5-10 seconds. Wonder if running cat5 to that box might fix the problem? Am calling MTS to find out what they will do to address it.

MTS response...

"This is an issue with Microsoft Media Room and we have requested a fix. There is no estimated date for when that fix will be provided."

I had a network jack in the same room as the 1200, so I unplugged the RG6, used a patch cable to hook to the wired network, and now everything seems to work fine. Can watch recorded HD on both TV's at the same time without any stuttering, can use the skip forward with no issues, etc.

I was having an issue on 1 of my TV's all the time and 1 some of the time.
I finally got MTS to come to the house today and take a look.
They replaced all of the coax cable on HPNA side.

The person that came out was an MTS employee. He stated that the cables should have been changed when the install was done. The contractor just reused the old wires and spliters. The MTS guy was suprised that it was working at all. One on the "old" splitters was actually from radio shack.

Thanks for the update Mike.

This latest info confirms what I have long suspected, that wiring quality is the reason behind the PVR playback issues to the VIP1200.

MTS has seemingly fixed the freeze-up issue. At least for me, anyway. I'm now able to do the 30 second FF jump on my second receiver....without the picture freezing up afterwards. Yay! Got a couple of calls from MTS this week, and they've done some sort of hardware upgrade...and so far so good. :)

My VIP1216 was wired from the Router with CAT5e and there were no signal issues when using the PVR on that box but my VIP1200 was connected by coaxial from the Router by the installer. This caused freezing when using the PVR on the model 1200 STB. I ran a CAT5e cable from the Router to the Network in connection on the VIP1200 and now the freezing and skipping during DVR/PVR playback has stopped. Why wouldn't the installer just run CAT5e to the second STB? What a pain! C'mon MTS!
Thankfully MTS Techs have posted the issues in this Forum. Thanks for going the extra mile to help customers stranded by MTS policy. Cudos!

Their original installation standards dictated that only the 1216 be wired with cat5, and all other secondary set top boxes be wired via coax.

Maybe a year or two ago, they changed it so that all the STB's can be on cat5. But they're very strict in that they can't be wired off a customer's router, only the MTS router. And in a case where there's more STB's than LAN ports, an MTS supplied D-Link gigabit switch is installed. BUT they don't want any internet connections plugged in at the same time on the switch.

While it is likely not encouraged, I have had some success in using a Dlink 868L router as a switch and access point. The MTS router handles all IP addresses, the Dlink is wired directly to that and handles my wireless network, and the STB and a blue ray player are wired off the dlink switch. So far in 4 months of that setup I have had no issues....

I'm sure it works fine, but they must have standards for us to adhere to for a reason. My guess is that you probably haven't saturated the network with too many simultaneous torrents or something.

I've seen so many things affect the whole service. Things like improperly set torrent programs (I'm guessing a virus could silently max out your bandwidth?) or a cell phone on WiFi stalling the internet.

One person had a garage door monitor wired to the modem. Whenever their second set top box was turned on (technically always on, just standby) the internet would stall out. I swapped their equipment one by one, but the problem finally stopped when the garage door thing was unplugged from the LAN.

IP sure can do some strange things :-/
