There's been some talk of WP7 using upwards of 50MB of mobile data per day while idling, and MS is now saying they've identified the issue in one of their (assuming prebundled) apps.

It makes me wonder if Apples's tight control over apps isn't a necessary evil. I mean, if someone were to suffer this bug while roaming, it could cost a user thousands of dollars. I think mobile consumers need a "curated environment" to a certain extent.

Now, of course, their habit of limiting content (like a Playboy magazine app) is a totally different discussion, but i think there is an important middle ground here.

A must have on a smartphone is a data counting app, easy to track your usage like Traffic Counter or NetCounter (Android) which warns you when you reach a predetermined set point. Android is open based and don't think they have had any issues, definitely the way to go over Apples ironclad approach.
