Hi,

This is my first post on this forum. I’ve tried to search this and other forums, but I can’t seem to find the answers that I’m looking for. So I’m hoping someone here will be able to give me some advice.

I live in Vancouver, and currently have 6 TVs hooked up using Shaw analog. I’d like to move to digital, and I’m considering Shaw HD, or possibly Telus Optik.

So, here are my questions:

1. If I move to Shaw HD on say 4 of my TVs, is it possible to split the coax and still use analog on the other 2 TVs (so I don’t need converter boxes for them)? Will I be charged for these analog lines?

2. If I have a Sony DVR, which accepts analog cable, will I still be able to record shows with it? I understand that it wont be recorded in HD, but, I’m hoping that the connection will be better than what I currently have. I mostly want to use my DVR so I have the ability to edit and archive (write to DVD) shows that I want. I’ll be using the Shaw PVR for my HD playback.

3. Is Shaw HD going to be releasing new converter boxes soon? I’m mostly interested in an option where the lag in switching channels, or pulling up the Guide doesn’t take as long. Telus Optik seems pretty snappy the times that I’ve used it.

I know these are noob questions, so thanks in advance for any help!

1. Yes re being able to use analogue. Charges will be for the digital service and someone from Shaw should be able to outline those.

2. I assume you mean DVD recorder. You may or you may not depending on the programme if you tune it or record it via the STB. Here's the thread on that issue and an FAQ on how to connect things - with the analogue connection, there should be no difference from what you have now: If you record it on the Shaw PVR first or use that as your digital tuner, then there could be issues as outlined in the thread, if your DVD recorder respects the CGMS-a signal that comes with some programming. Workarounds are outlined in the links in post 1 of the thread.

Hi 57,

Thanks for such a prompt and detailed reply.

I forgot to ask. If I upgrade to Shaw HD, does a technician need to come to my home? Or can I just get the cable boxes/PVRs and install them myself?

Thanks!
