The world's largest software maker, Microsoft released a beta version of Windows 8 on Feb. 29th.

The test version of Windows 8 was unveiled at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona to drum up some excitement especially in the wake of Apple's upcoming March 7th media event in San Francisco to launch iPad 3.

Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft said: "With Windows 8, we reimagined the different ways people interact with their PC and how to make everything feel like a natural extension of the device, whether using a Windows 8 tablet, laptop or all-in-one. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview brings a no-compromises approach to using your PC.”

While Windows 7 is Microsoft's fastest-selling operating system on the market, exceeding 525 million in sales so far, the company believes Windows 8 is "much better."

This latest version includes the Windows Store, where users can try out apps for free, access cloud-based storage and even try a test version of Internet Explorer 10.
