Hi everyone,
First time poster here so please forgive me if this isn't the right category.

I have a very perplexing problem happening to my parents TV. They have a 42 inch Samsung plasma 720p television that works very well. They also have Shaw digital cable and HD channels. All of this is working fine.

I brought my xbox over to their house this weekend so we could all play Kinect (love it, btw). We played for several hours and had no problems. The yellow, red, and white wires went into the appropriate slots on the side of the tv. We had great picture, good sound, etc.

After we were done playing, I shut the xbox off and we turned the video source back to the TV to watch a movie. We had great picture but no sound!

After half an hour of unplugging, cleaning, and replugging in cables, making sure that we hadn't messed with the speaker settings, etc, I finally called Shaw thinking it was a Shaw problem. Another 45 minutes on the phone with them and troubleshooting both the TV and the cable box to the best of their ability, we still hadn't found a solution.

Frustrated, we gave up and my cousin and I decided to play Kinect again. The xbox was still plugged into the tv (it had been unplugged/replugged) and I hit the power button on it while we were still on the TV channel we were wanting to watch. Lo and behold - we had sound! From the TV show that was on, not the xbox. O_O

The next day, while my uncle was watching tv, I carefully unplugged the xbox (which was still on) and as all 3 wires disconnected, he still had sound on his movie, which was being played on the tv - not through a dvd player.

The tv has worked since then until tonight. I am back at my place, but I left my xbox at my parents so my younger sister could play it. She played it today and had fun, had great sound. But again, now they do not have any sound on their tv.

We have gone through all the troubleshooting tips we can find online. We've disconnected and reconnected everything. No settings were ever changed when they started playing the xbox. All they did was plug it in, and change the video source to the appropriate one, then turn it back for the tv.

The only thing connected to the tv aside from the xbox is the Shaw HD/PVR box. No blu-ray, dvd, or speaker system. The menu on the tv says the speakers are set to the tv speakers.

Does anyone have any idea on what's going on? It would be GREATLY appreciated!

Do you have the tv connected to the Shaw HD box through an HDMI cable? My best guess would be a faulty HDMI cable. The cheap ones tend to lose sound periodically in my experiences. If you have an alternate cable or Component cable try that and see if it corrects the problem

Good Luck

That's what a friend of ours thought, too. He brought his Shaw box over and his HDMI cable. It worked for a few minutes, but again, when they turned the Xbox on and played it for a few moments, then turned back to the TV, they had no sound.

There IS sound on the TV when you turn it on/off though. So to me, that means that it can't be the TV speakers, right?
