About the Trilogy and the Films

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy tells the story of Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), a hobbit who battles against the Dark Lord Sauron to save his world, Middle-earth, from the grip of evil. In the films, Frodo and his fellowship of friends and allies embark on a desperate journey to rid Middle-earth of the source of Sauron's greatest strength, The One™ Ring -- a ring that has the power to enslave the inhabitants of Middle-earth. The trilogy tells tales of extraordinary adventures across the treacherous landscape of Middle-earth and reveals how the power of friendship, love and courage can hold the forces of darkness at bay. Beside Wood, the films star Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, featuring Sean Bean and Ian Holm, with Andy Serkis as Gollum. The films also star Marton Csokas, Craig Parker and Lawrence Makaoare.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
In this first part of the Trilogy, the young hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a ring; but this ring is no mere trinket. It is the One Ring, an instrument of absolute power that could allow Sauron, the dark Lord of Mordor, to rule Middle-earth and enslave its peoples. Frodo, together with a Fellowship that includes his loyal hobbit friends, humans, a wizard, a dwarf and an elf, must take the One Ring across Middle-earth to Mount Doom, where it first was forged, and destroy it forever. Such a journey means venturing deep into territory manned by Sauron, where he is amassing his army of Orcs. And it is not only external evils that the Fellowship must combat, but also internal dissension and the corrupting influence of the One Ring itself. The course of future history is entwined with the fate of the Fellowship. The film won four Oscars® for Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, Makeup and Original Score.

I can understand keeping movie's split into separate parts (but only if they're taking advantage of the extra space for a super-high bitrate transfer). What I don't get is why they wouldn't just combine all the DVD extras onto a single BD. I really dislike the idea of artificially inflating the disc count of any release for what I'm assuming is some type of marketing gimmick to increase the perceived value of the entire set.

I bought the DVD version for $100 only to see it drop by 60-70% within a year. Given the poor reception of the 1st BD release, I think I'll wait and see if I can pick it up cheap (if good) closer to X'mas.

I wonder how many people that would buy the BD_EE already have the DVD_EE and have watched all (or most) of the extras already will be watching them again.

Personally, give me just the movies, skip the extras as I can watch them on the DVDs I already have with my EE and drop the price.

Like some others, I will be waiting for reviews on the quality before jumping on these. Since we usually watch these over Christmas every year, that buys me some time for a price drop also.

Otherwise, I'm excited.

Chris, no one actually has it in their hands yet.
It's only available for pre-order on the Futureshop and Amazon websites (and others I'm sure).
It ships June 28th.

As eager as I am to watch the extended editions in HD, I really can't justify the purchase of a 15 disc bluray package, of which 9 are dvds.
I'll wait for the movie only set.

I wonder why they would remaster FOTR, and not the other two films.
Probably because it was agreed that FOTR did indeed have a poor transfer but the other two films were adequate, if not spectacular.

The extended version run time is just over 11 hrs. Its a marathon. Ive watched all 3 extended in a row but its surprisingly hard to do. Rest of the time I watch it I do 1 per day.

Obviously you're not hardly or fanatical enough, such as the Star Wars fans who watch (in a cinema) all 6 (extended edition) movies in a row. I've only watched 4 & 1 in the cinema. Not sure if I've ever sat through a whole showing of 5 or 6 on video at home.

I sat through all six Star Wars films one afternoon/evening shortly after the DVDs became available. It was a bit too much. One thing that becomes obvious in these marathons are the many inconsistencies in the films. You only notice them when you see the movies one after another. No film maker is perfect in this regard.

Each of the LOTR films are longer but are also richer in detail and subtlety. I found them easier to watch in a marathon as there is more "substance" to them compared to the Star Wars films. I'm looking forward to the BDs.
