Looking for High Speed Interent between Kelowna & Vernon

2781 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Leeboy
My buddy who lives right off the highway between Kelowna and Vernon needs high speed internet. He currently is using a telus stick and his last internet bill was over $500 from playing online PS3 . We play quite alot, but thats pretty darn expensive. Has anyone heard of a alternative to the sticks that will play a smooth PS3 and not be so expensive? Thanks

I dont even know where to start? How would i search this?
His only other reasonable options are DSL or cable.

Who provides service to his area?
He lives in no mans land, i dont even think he has a phone line ( if he does, theres deffinately no high speed port around) and he uses star choice satellite

Well, at least he has a reasonably clear view of the sky. Satellite may be his only other option. I don't know if the ping times would be acceptable for gaming. A quick Google search turns up a couple of providers...

I don't think satellite will work. If there is a fixed wireless provider that serves his area that would be a better option.

Barring that, he is, as we say, SOL.
That sucks....Would the satellite be too laggy?
Smart Hub

I don't have any personal experience, but I've read that satellite would be too laggy for gaming.

Your buddy should make sure he is on the highest data plan. For example, the Telus $30 plan is 500 MB and the Telus $65 plan is 5 GB. In all cases, additional data is $0.05 per MB ($50 per GB).

It sounds like he is using well over 5 GB per month. Then a Telus Smart Hub might be a better choice. With that device you can get up to 10 GB for $60/month and $15/GB for excess data. He can also add a phone option if he doesn't have a land line.

If he's on a contract right now, he might be able to negotiate a transfer to the Smart Hub.
Ok.....Thanks Dave, i will pass that along today for him....Just out of curiosty, which has better plans for the stick using internet ? Shaw or Telus?
Shaw doesn't have a wireless service yet and probably won't have rural service for quite some time, if ever. I think Rogers and Bell have similar products.
Right on....He's looking into the Smart Hub now....He told me he was using Telus Cradle Point. 5 gig for $60
He picks it up Monday...Hes stoked..Thanks everyone
