Do the repeaters in Canada belong to the Canadian satellite companies? If they ever lost their business connections to Sirius/XM in the US, could they operate their own network(s) through the exisiting repeaters?

I've noticed this for a few weeks as well.

I notice when driving downtown Winnipeg and there are tall buildings on the south side of the street the signal cuts out.

Man do they ever need an XM repeater in Yellowknife. All those new cars/trucks coming with XM and no one subscribes after the free period is over due to such bad sat signal.

Does anybody know the range of a single repeater?
Reply to post #5 about repeater range from StarChoice

There once was a Sirius repeater atop my very own appartment building in Longueuil. Using a Stileto 1 radio with headphone antenna, I proceeded to walk around until terrestrial signal would either topple to another earth repeater or simply go dead. And so I've assessed a range of about 2 km at ground level. However I successfully used a repeater in Québec city from inside a bus cruising on highway 20 for a good 5-10 km with same setup.

So your mileage will vary.

Like any other terrestrial signal, range will vary with transmission power and terrain. Signals at the frequencies used by Sirius/XM are especially sensitive to terrain conditions and are easily blocked by obstacles such as hills, trees and buildings.

This wasn't the case a few weeks ago in Winnipeg. I've been a XM radio customer for over 8 years and this is the first time that I've noticed the signal loss in recent weeks.

I've been on the phone with siriusxm Canada for weeks regarding the signal. It's never been this bad, and they keep telling me it will be fixed 'next week'.

I've been harassing them for months concerning the repeater on the top of Radio-Canada in Montréal as being non-fonctional.

They don't even have a clue what is a repeater on the Customer Service phone line.

I was not aware that repeaters are necessary.I thought we got the signal directly from the Satellite. One thing I know is that I listen to the free preview channel in my car and for the last two days its been acquiring signal on and off.Never did this before.

The repeaters are for areas in which you may not have direct line of sight with the satellite

Signal in Edmonton has been bad for the last two days--basically unusable at this point. I'm using the built-in radio in my car. Never had a problem before.
