I bought my wife a Kindle DX with 3G wireless for Xmas. Ever since I have seen more and more publicity about the coming of 4G. Being totally bereft of technical knowledge about these services, I am concerned that as 4G networks roll out, my Kindle will lose its wireless capability unless 4G is backwards compatible with 3G.

Do I have cause for concern?

No - your existing Kindle can do 2G aka EDGE. And whether we currently have 4G in North America is debatable. Carriers have been "rebranding" their networks as 4G when they really are more likely 3.5G

Would someone actually upgrade an ebook reader because it has 4G? Does it matter if that 500KB book arrives in 5 seconds or 10 seconds?

The screen and usability seems about 10 times more important than wireless speed.
