Check your target version tonight/tommorow.

As was posted here earlier and a C&P from another site that references a VP's response to a subscriber regarding the upcoming code:

The new feature set, if all passes, includes the following:

- Far improved operational stability for channel tuning (far few lock-ups during channel change -- in fact, so far we have seen none from that cause)
- Far improved timer performance for DVR recording, and for PPV recordings (again, so far no failures)
- Far improved performance for playback of DVR recordings (again, so far no failures)
- New sorting criteria for recordings
- A way to jump to identified times of recordings (i.e. 1 hour in)
For the majority of us that were on A8, this is great news as we'll finaly get the long sought after features that BC delivered to a selected few hundred.

For those of us on BC just waiting for the box to die after too many reboots, this should be a life saver.

Do check out all the new features in the beginning of the BC thread.

Enjoy the improved stability that CC brings.
Have faith that while not 100%, it's the closest the box has ever been and that new and exciting stuff is in the pipe.

From my experience in the past several weeks, what was quoted appears true for the most part.

Unfortunatly my source of information that gave me a closer view than most is no longer available.

Good luck and enjoy the efforts of many.

I'll still be around to help out as best I can.

Thanks for your response jbracing24. There are no sharp bends in the coax and the problem does not occur when I connect a 500 receiver to the same cables so I cannot see how the cables are the problem. We live in a very arid area and have minimal rain so I cannot see moisture being the problem. I do have a ground wire from the dish to a copper ground pipe. I notice there is a ground wire added to the new cables but I have not connected them to anything. Any other comments
Thanks
Lester
What is the condition of the multiswitch? Where is it located?
I do not know what a multiswitch is. As far as I know the dish connects with the receivers directly by way of the coaxial cables. There are no swiches in the system as far as I am aware. Maybe I need educating on justwhat you are asking Thanks for responding though
Lester
Good receiver gone bad

I had my receiver replaced a couple of months back (usual problems). I even posted on this forum how remarkably stable the replacement unit had been. About a week back, it froze for the first time. Since then, it has frozen about a half dozen times. Tonight, front panel resets were innefective, so I unplugged it, waited, plugged it back in.

Anybody else have a similar experience ?

What does this say about the root cause ?

Steve
I taped the Lions vs the Dolphins this afternoon. When I tried watching it, I had to re-set it 4 or 5 times, and eventually gave up trying to watch it early in the third quarter. That is besides the momentary picture freezes and sound drop outs.
I might have another receiver in it's final life stage !

I too have been getting lock-ups with the 530 within the last week, about 2-3 a day. some were so bad that there was no responce from the power button. before that it had been fine for months.
I have a hard time to believe that it would have anything to do with the stream but as an installer, I had 12-15 dead 530 in the past 11 days. Much more than the last 2-5 a week. Weird...
It's Back!!!

I am sorry to report that after 3 weeks of having no audio drops and pixelation on recorded programs, that the problems seems to have come back. Several recorded programs have had this problem over the past 3 days. It is on both HD and SD channels. I am running a 5x8 multiswitch and have checked all the connections. They are all tight. Live viewing is fine. This only seems to affect recorded programs. Any one with any more suggestions? I have already replaced an old worn coax.
I do not know what a multiswitch is.
Since dish configurations do differ, perhaps one of our more knowledgeable partners with *C can help you with that. What dish are you using?
I had the same problem with my 530. I changed coax, switched outputs and coax from the multiswitch to the other 530, and still the problem persisted. I had even recorded the same event on each 530 and only one would have sound dropouts. The last week I have also noticed jump ahead or back would cause the unit to freeze for a moment. Starchoice had done a few MR with and without harddrive erase, this would solve the problem for a few days. The unit seemed to work better with BC (maybe this is a cause of the problems I now have) but then it would sometimes drop recordings. Starchoice is now sending me a replacement.
The dish I am using has the quad LNB with the four inputs to a 5x8 powered multiswitch.
I am still getting sound dropouts on boith recorded and live shows. I have checked all possible other causes and it seems to me that it is within the 530 itself. The very first 530 I had never ever had a sound or video dropout but the last two both have them. When experiencing sound dropouts watching live shows a frony panel reset usually cures it for a while

I just got a new 530 authorized at the beginning of this week. Out of the box, it was showing the A4 code. In the last few days, it got the CC upgrade. Am I correct in assuming that CC is the current code?
Correct.

End of Feb/07, Iam most likely gone, over to Bell, Even if the 530 drops to $449.00 over x-mas, I think I will rent from Bell. When you rent, it is only 2 year commitment as the technolgy is taking leaps and bounds, I can upgrade, full warrenty throughout the contract. Man the 530 is still so much of a risk when the only choice is to buy it. Wake up * Choice, give us a reliable quality product!!! Kevin270 has a whole wack of valid points and he gets beat up here because a lot of us rap ourselves in the * Choice flag.
From everything I have heard, read and experienced about Bell it has some bad customer service, but at least the equipment on the PVR`s is and are light years ahead of * Choice.
Sad I have to leave, but that is a choice I make weighing all the options. Bell is out marketing Shaw/StarChoice here by a country mile!

Still on the fence...

I must agree with canada45, and, unfortunately for me, time is running out.

I was really hoping these machines would be stable by now - and by stable I mean no resets ever, just as my SA Explorer 8300 is now. I've had this PVR for 2 years and never had an issue.

I need to make a decision by the end of December if I am going to take advantage of the 1/2 price Bell PVR. I sure hope another code fix gets released in the meantime.
Yes and No

...Kevin270 has a whole wack of valid points and he gets beat up here because a lot of us rap ourselves in the * Choice flag. ...
Valid points, undoubetedly!
Wrapped in a *c flag, not many and not anymore.
I think most have a very realistic view of the situation.
But we have seen improvements along the way, and for many, it has reached a point of reasonable elation with only minimal frustration.

Where Kevin270 takes the rap, is not for making asutute reports, it is by not considering that his experience, while completely valid for him, may not be typical for many others, possibly even the majotity if I may be so bold and I will be so bold and that his crusade if disuasion may be too overstated and with too much frequency.

Other than that, you either have to either admire his tenacity or admonish his foolishness for still putting up with it and not moving on.

IMHO of course!

Another 530 quirk

I just got mine and ran into a problem. I was in the middle of recording a program, and was watching a previous one that I had recorded. When it finished, I tried deleting it while the machine was still in record mode. Hindsight is 20-20. I'm comparing it to asking a computer to delete a file while it is simultaneously trying to write one.

The machine froze, and wouldn't let me do anything. I waited until the recording finished, and still no response. After re-booting the box, it told me that I had lost the program it was attempting to record because of a power failure.

Can anyone shed some light on this? It would have been nice if a warning screen came up saying it couldn't process the delete request until recording finished. Maybe in the next software upgrade. LOL.
Welcome to 530 land Carl! This is only one of the many oversights of the DSR530. Not much thought was put into the programming, and it took them over a year just to get it where it is today. You should have seen it when it was first released.

What made you decide to buy a 530?

What you attempted to do was a valid excercise.
What happened was not and is clearly an error at the time.
The only warning screen is in deleting a program is the "are you sure..."
And to UNPROTECT the program before deleting it IF protected.
You must also STOP RECORDING and delete it if it's still in progress.
Hope that helps a wee bit.

With the latest CC code, I do what you do nightly.
Watch the previously nights programs and JUMP, not FF acrosss the commercials and then delete the program from the list.
This happens while recording the current nights programs.

I think I've had 1 crash in the past 3 months doing this and that occured pretty much right at the top of the hour when things may have been switching.

If you don't have the lates CC code yet, then that will certainly happen by almost just looking at it.
Check you version and try again and once CC is there and see if you don't have significantly better luck.

Kevin270 is correct, the guide and user navigation was rushed to get things to market after some embarrasment due to delays.

A revised IPG in terms of graphics is immently expected (hopefully, I finished it at the end of June), see thread on the matter.
Parts of the overhaul was a bit more thought into making certain activites more intuitive and simpler, but alas, even it had a time deadline.

Good luck and welcome aboard.
At least you missed the first year of pain and suffering that *c inflicted upon thousands of unbeknownst fileld testers.
