Check your target version tonight/tommorow.

As was posted here earlier and a C&P from another site that references a VP's response to a subscriber regarding the upcoming code:

The new feature set, if all passes, includes the following:

- Far improved operational stability for channel tuning (far few lock-ups during channel change -- in fact, so far we have seen none from that cause)
- Far improved timer performance for DVR recording, and for PPV recordings (again, so far no failures)
- Far improved performance for playback of DVR recordings (again, so far no failures)
- New sorting criteria for recordings
- A way to jump to identified times of recordings (i.e. 1 hour in)
For the majority of us that were on A8, this is great news as we'll finaly get the long sought after features that BC delivered to a selected few hundred.

For those of us on BC just waiting for the box to die after too many reboots, this should be a life saver.

Do check out all the new features in the beginning of the BC thread.

Enjoy the improved stability that CC brings.
Have faith that while not 100%, it's the closest the box has ever been and that new and exciting stuff is in the pipe.

From my experience in the past several weeks, what was quoted appears true for the most part.

Unfortunatly my source of information that gave me a closer view than most is no longer available.

Good luck and enjoy the efforts of many.

I'll still be around to help out as best I can.

Probably like I mentioned in my last post, in this case, the STB switching between graphics and video modes.

The new IPG should be a lot smoother as best I remember it since there is no scaling and less complete switching between video and graphics modes.
Just a quick note about CC. I have not had any problems with it and I love the fact that phone calls now appear on the screen so I know who it is.
I used to think the same thing until one time I transfered a recording from my receiver to a DVD recorder and then burned it to a DVD. I happened to watch my recording and low and behold a phone number from the Chimney Doctor pops up on the screen. Don't record anything if you are expecting a phone call, or remove the phone cable from the receiver while recording.
CallerID Disable

If it's easier, it can be disabled in the Options Menu's!
First Lockup with CC

After 2 weeks my 530 locked up last night. I had set it to record a program at 6:00 p.m. and to auto tune to another at 6:00 p.m. I came into the room about 1 minute after six the auto tuned chanel was on and the record lights were not moving and one of them was not lit. When I went to check, I pressed menu, nothing happened. I tried to change channels and nothing happened there either. None of the buttons on the remote had any effect.

So I reset and then everything was OK. My recording started again. When I went to check on the recording I noticed that in fact it had started recording at 6:00 p.m. as programed and then was broken by a power failure (reset I presume). So only missed a minute or two of the recorded program. Other wise it has been working fine recording and autotuning everthing as it should.

I've been checking in on this thread every couple of weeks or so and am I reading that there has been a major improvement in the reliability/performance of the DSR530 DVR?

I hope that is the case as I'd like to get one, but previous reports have been less than encouraging.
Keenan,

I was one of the person that gave an unfavourable review of the 530. I have since received a replacement 530 that has downloaded the new cc code and I am happy to report that I am more than pleased with the improvement to the receiver. I have had a 530 since they were released, and although no one can tell you whether or not to take the plunge, I am just thrilled with the improvements and don't know how I ever survived without a PVR before.
Okay, cool, here's hoping more will report the same experience. As is usually the case with internet forums, you only see the negatives being talked about. If the unit is working properly, people generally don't post that fact.

About 5 months ago I wouldn't have touched this unit with a 10' pole given the reports I'd read. Now, it seems things have changed for the better.

Thanks for the reply BTW.
530 now worthy of consideration

If you scan over the past few weeks postings on the 530, many happy users have chimed in and I do think the tides have finally turned in the 530's favour, just as expected.
So i just got the 3rd of my 530's activated, first 2 went defective. I read through most of this thread and saw a lot of problems with the DVI cutting out and black and white issues. My problem is I have no picture at all using a brand new DVI-HDMI cable into my Toshiba 52hmx85. I have the dvd player also running hdmi and it works great. I tried the SC into the same port that the dvd was running but still nothing. It works great through component though.

I checked the software of the unit and it is 00.A0?
target version: 00.00.CC?

My last one had A8 on it and had no problems other than the occasional freeze up with recording.

Anyone have any tips for me? The rep at SC that activated it had no idea about why it wouldnt work and just kept saying that all i needed was the hd channel code added to make it work lol Clearly she has no idea...

Please help :)

On another note has anyone had a really hard time getting through lately, I waited for 30 mins on hold tonight and gave up 3 other times this week, each at over 30 mins...

I would suggest waiting for the CC code and then hook up the dvi-hdmi cable. The CC dowload should occur between 2am and 5am overnight tonight so make sure your receiver is turned off (not unplugged) and on channel 299 (not an HD channel). Code A0 is very old... over a year so I think there was alot of problems with the dvi cable then.

As far as wait times goes I'm surprised you weren't offered an automatic call back if you had to wait that long. Last time I called there was a 13 minute wait but I was offered the auto callback option and then it was only about 5 minutes later when they called back.
Adjusting start/stop times of recording

Is there a way to set the start and ending time of a program. ABC has the annoying practice of starting and ending programs at 2 or 3 minutes past the hour. So, you need to adjust the recording times ... or you miss the ending!

I know how to do it on Bell's PVR and Shaw's PVR, but I cannot seem to find how to do it on the DSR530.

Thanks.
Easy my good man...

To extend or modify the recording times when set from the guide via point and shoot, go into Options 6-5 Timers, select the program of interest and manually adjust the start or end times as well as any recurrences and dont forget to SAVE.

Problem solved!

1. Revisit the problem again after you receive the CC download, presumably by the time you read this or within the next day or so.
2. Review the threads about rebooting the box and TV in the correct order to ensure proper handshaking.
3. Ensure the RED BUTTON, behind the right front panel door is set to 720p or 1080i.
480p, 480i and 0000 Native while on SD are NOT compliant with HDMI specifications because they are NOT true HiDef signals. SOME sets MAY work.
Lastly, don't get all hung up on DVI/HDMI when Component was designed to look fabulous. Later when manufactures, set top and display, get theie $H1T together on a spec. that actually works and is not 3 different DVI specs and now round 3 or later on HDMI, then maybe get excited if things don't work out of the box.

Remember the early PC days of Plug and Pray, er Play! Same deal!
Finally found the event timers in Options! Still getting use to the menus. Each PVR has its own different layout. The DSR530 is very different from the 9200.

So far no problems in recording programs while watching another and using all the forward and advance buttons.
If you scan over the past few weeks postings on the 530, many happy users have chimed in and I do think the tides have finally turned in the 530's favour, just as expected.
Yes, I think I'll be pulling the trigger on one very soon. Being in California makes support a bit more tricky, which was a concern with a buggy box, but if the unit is finally earning some accolades that should be less of an issue.
530 Put through the paces

Well last night was one should probabley chime in on.

My wife was away last night so I had record-timers set on shows she and/or my kids would want to see set from 8-1am on a host of different channels. I was watching a combination of live and recorded shows. Around 9:30 I put the live feed on pause (HD channel) while I went out to pick up my daughter from work and didn't get back until after 10:30. Finished watching that program.

Everything worked fine.

Glad you're enjoying the 90 minute LOD buffer.
I choose that value to be the same for HD and SD based on the 160 GB drive and some competative units only offering 60 minutes and some 120 minutes that had 250GB drives.
My cable PVR with a 120 buffer is totally variable and I never know just quite how long I have. Anywhere from 10-40 minutes or so.

I think the value offers a good balance and the consistent time is nice.

This problem annoys me quite a bit. I record movies all the time off of TCM and have to manually adjust the end time of every movie I record so that the ending isn't cut off.

I complained to *C earlier this year about it, was told the CC release would fix the problem.

Phoned *C this week to complain the problem still exists was told "it's been sent to the programmers to work on". No idea when/if it will ever be resolved.

Grrr.
Then I think you were fed a line.

The problem is not with *C, nor the receiver, but with the accuracy of the data the content provider (TCM) sends to the guide data provider (Tribune Media Service) for the box to interpret.

Since you know that TCM movies have some anomalies and the method to make the adjustments is posted above, you have the answer to your own problem.

Often the opposite problem exists on TMN HD movies that use a 2.5 hour time block in the guide and are done just a few minutes past the 1.5 hour mark, so extra disk space is wasted. This is common on their adult HD content periodically.

Since the technology does not yet exist to have a PROGRAM transmit some form of signal to the IPG and the recording device that tells it precisely when it begins and ends, which would be great for sporting events that go overtime and programs delayed due to political interuptions, then we must deal with the problem manually.

If a prgrammer was aware of an adjustment in the published schedule, which comes out a week or better ahead of time, the propagation delay from the content provider/broadcaster to the guide group to the sat data uplink to the box to update a guide change would end up happening after the fact.

Sorry to say, you are stuck with it.

Hmmm I have also experienced this every time I record something. Cuts off at the end. :(

I will give my unit another few weeks and decide whether I can justify $699 plus taxes.
