I, too have experienced the delays with remote to my plasma tv. I imagined after a couple of years that I should change the batteries in my remote but still had the problem after so doing.
My BIGGEST problem is audio dropout at startup. It's very frustrating when I turn on the TV and then wait for the audio to lock in from my receiver. It sometimes takes several minutes before I can adjust the volume to something listenable.
Having never used HDMI before I've wondered whether it has anything to do with my trouble?
I've also seen elsewhere on this site talk about dropouts of audio/video due to Shaw/Rogers cutting back bandwidth or using too much of it for the increased HD traffic to their consumers. There still doesn't appear to be any definitive verdict on this issue, either.
So, what about my audio problem? What's causing the failure to lock in?
I bought a 5900 receiver a few months ago with my new subscription and everything was working great for a few weeks. Afterwards, the receiver stopped responding to remote commands like it used to. It only starting registering, say, 1 out of 5 remote key presses. Browsing the guide became unbelievably slow, and typing in a 3-digit channel number became impossible.
Somehow, the remote accidentally fell against the wall and I replaced it with a Harmony H659. This one also worked fine for a while, but then started acting up again. Since then, I've learn that these 5900 remotes operate over both UHF and IR ... so is it possible to re-assign what frequency the Harmony operates over? Is UHF even necessary in its case?
Basically, does anyone have a 5900 working with a Harmony? Did you experience any issues like I describe above? Any help with this would be much appreciated.
I believe I just stumbled upon the root cause of this interference. I read on these forums that LCD TVs occasionally interfere with IR receivers due to high freq. IR bleeding out from the halogen backlight. I toned down my backlight with a slight improvement, but the receiver was still unusable.
So I decided to turn off all the lights and give it a go, and shazzaaaaam it worked fine. So my lights have been interfering receiver this whole time. Funny thing is, these particular lights aren't halogen, they're plain old incandescent. Weird...
I hope this helps anyone else with similar symptoms.
I'm having a similar issue and I was wondering what you guys thought.
I have a Viewsonc n3250 LCD in the bedroom as a spare TV. I don't have sat or cable on it, I only use it for watching DVD's and playing Xbox. Needless to say it doesn't get used as much as my tv in the home theater room. Well lately I keep getting the Menu popping up as if someone pressed the menu button on the remote. This happens between 2 and 25 times before it stops. This can sometimes happens a few times an hour.
The TV is less then 2 years old but out of warranty. I've tried covering the IR to see if one of my other remotes was causing interference but it doesn't help.
Well I had this issue and have since 100% resolved the issue. I have Bell TV (formaly Expressvu) 3100 and my ned 47 inch LG LCD was totaly blocking the IR for the first 10 to 15 minutes. All I had to do was change the Channel the IR remoted worked on. Default is 1 and now it's on 13. Not sure if all STB can be changed.
1. on the 3100 you push the info button on the remote to be on the info screen, on this screen is says what channel the remote is working on.
2. on the remote push and hold SAT untill the lights flash
3. push 1 3 # on the remote, the lights will flash again
4. push the little red record button and you will see on the screen the remote channel change to 13.
After installing a new Sony EX500 TV with the "Ambient Light Sensor", I found that my satellite receiver would operate erratically when using it's IR remote. Disabling the Sony TV light sensor was a temporary fix.
I called Sony support and they sent me a small polarizing filter screen to put over the IR aperture on the satellite receiver. Since then, no problems using the TV with the light sensor enabled.
OK, but the sensor can often cause "pumping" of the picture brightness as you watch a programme and the brightness of the image changes. What happens is the picture gets brighter and less bright as the image changes (from a dark scene to a light scene for example), especially in low light conditions. The sensor doesn't react instantaneously, so it's often "behind" the action on screen.
If you watch mostly under controlled lighting conditions, I recommend turning the sensor off. Or have two picture modes - one for daylight and one for controlled lighting both with the sensor off.
Here's a post useful for the proper setup of your TV:
Most new TVs ask the question when you initially start it up at home "Is this TV being used at home or at the store". If you answer "home" this puts most newer TVs into a mode (usually called Standard, or something similar) that doesn't emit as much IR spray as the previous "Vivid" (Torch) mode did. So this has not been as much of an issue, however, it's not to say it doesn't happen any more.
Note that it's not just the contrast that can cause the IR spray - there are lots of other TV settings as mentioned in post 1 of this thread (and as you mentioned).
You may wish to try placing the hub in different locations if possible and as far from the TV as possible and also check the other options per post 1 of this thread.
The IR interference issue was probably more common with florescent back lights than with LED. At least, I've encountered it less often with so called LED TVs.
My experience suggests that turning the backlight down to a low level is more likely to cause "IR spray" issues than anything else. I've seen this with several TVs that had the backlight turned down for viewing in darkened rooms. The probably explanation is that turning the backlight down shifts the spectrum of the light output and creates more IR light in the frequency range that remotes use. This could also explain why interference is more likely when the TV is first turned on. Some lamps tend to emit a dimmer, redder light when they are cold and then increase and shift light output somewhat as phosphors and other materials warm up. That's especially true of florescent lamps that are less efficient in cold or damp conditions.
Note that TVs are not the only source of IR interference. Any type of florescent lamp (including LED) can potentially cause issues. I've seen sunsets cause IR interference and IR remotes that caused odd behavior in other brands of devices.
Well, the problem was solved when I set the Harmony software to control the PVR from the remote instead of the Hub. This somewhat defeats the purpose of the Hub but for now it works. I don't have a lot of options on where I could put the Hub other than where it is now, which is on a bookcase to my immediate left.
