Is Shaw throttling Netflix?

I ask because I have recently switched to shaw internet and have noticed my internet speed come to a complete crawl when there are two different netflix streams going.

I have my netflix video quality set to the lowest setting which is .3 gb an hour.

Am I paranoid or something because I swear my internet slows to a crawl during the day when netflix and other streaming video services are in effect.

Ok, I know this is old but perhaps something has changed...

I'm seeing my Netflix quality drop substantially though the course of a movie. Typically the first movie will be OK but suffer a few quality drops, but by the time I'm halfway through watching a second one, the quality drops to 240SD. Stopping and resuming the movie sometimes corrects the quality but it soon drops again.

Pausing the movie for several minutes to allow it to buffer more does nothing to solve the issue.

I'm on HS Extreme (25Mbps) and using a PS3 for playback.

If watching iTunes HD rented movies, they're fine. A 2 hour iTunes movie might finish downloading in an hour if I watch as it downloads so I know the internet connection is remaining fast throughout.

Either Shaw is throttling Netflix or Netflix is struggling to provide 1080HD or 720HD. God help us if they ever try to serve up the 4K stuff.

I remember when Netflix first put out SuperHD, Telus got some Netflix servers almost right away and Shaw didn't. I wonder if this is still the case. If it is, then it could just be a congestion problem somewhere.

Are you using a service like unblock-us? The proxy in-the-middle could be having congestion issues.

Or perhaps a router that is between you and the Netflix servers you're using could be saturated.

In my recent experience, my Shaw network issues were due to congestion in my local "node". And I think this is typically where network congestion happens on a cable network since once you get off the "last mile" of copper they've got big trunks of fiber, so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem unless a particular network device is overloaded.

Perhaps you should try a tracert to the Netflix server you're connecting to.

Not using any proxy services.

I didn't know ISPs installed Netflix servers.

It's just odd that I don't have any problems with iTunes downloads but Netflix is down at VHS quality after an hour or two of watching.

How can I tell what Netflix server my PS3 is connecting to?

@pinto: nope, Netflix does co-locate servers on willing ISPs infrastructure Akamai-style. That way if a Netflix customer is using said ISP, they get directed to the Netflix server that is hosting content within the ISPs infrastructure. This makes things cheaper for both the ISP and Netflix from a bandwidth perspective.

Accepting these servers into their infrastructure was previously a requirement before a ISP's customers would have been able to access SuperHD content. That requirement was recently lifted.
