Is it possible to change your public IP with MTS Ultimate Service?

I don't think so. I've had the same IP address since the beginning (7 months).

I'm not sure if it's the public IP, but I remember hearing early on that they set up the system so that it only has two IP leases. So if they both get used up (eg. swapping 2wires, or possibly even just hitting the red reset button on the original unit) then the system locks it out for 24 hours. I think this is a measure to protect against unauthorized use of the system.

I don't know the exact details, so don't quote me. I just know that it's picky that way. Say if I have a customer who is transferring their Ultimate service (weird to have that already) and they carry their equipment, if the 2wire was unplugged less that 24 hours ago, it's a given that it will get locked out if I sync it up at the new place. So I think installers are just swapping them regardless now.

Unless you've been assigned a static address, there's always a chance it could change, although changes may be few and far between. Normally, with DHCP, you retain the same address for as long as you keep renewing it, unless something else forces a change.

I know it is possible to do a transfer with Ultimate and keep the current 2wire as I did that recently. The tech was a little fustrated with the fact that it did not want to just work but he persisted and after a call he was able to get it working. Perhaps there is a backend process where they can unlock the 2wire so it can be reused. As the tech said it is silly to be doing swaps to new equipment every time there is a move.

Maybe the Data Test dudes can do something about it, but maybe they aren't supposed to (might be more time consuming, so MTS probably doesn't want to tie up phone lines in one of their most important departments?).

I've had to do a "Broadband release" in the MDC console of the 2wire on certain occasions (swapping RG's to troubleshoot, I think) which I think in the early stages was because the port would be locked out for 24 hours. I'm not sure, but I think it's different now in that the 2wire unit will be locked out for 24 hours. I haven't had to swap ports for a while, so I think that's how it is now.
