That's one strategy. I usually do my research up to Christmas having narrowed my search to a few options. When the Boxing week sale flyers come out, I finish my search and purchase the item in Boxing week.
I suppose if you purchase in early December and get a price match guarantee - doesn't always apply to Boxing day sales - then that's an approach that would guarantee you have the item, but require a second visit and hassle to get the difference. Also, if something else similar comes up during those 3 weeks, you may miss out on that option.
