At its webOS event in San Francisco today, Hewlett-Packard (HP) unveiled a new tablet computer called the TouchPad which, like the iPad will come in WiFi and 3G versions.

The new device, looking quite similar to the iPad, weighs in at 1.6 pounds and features a 9.7-inch 1,024 x 768 pixel capacitive multitouch display, virtual keyboard, and instant-on access just like the iPad.

The TouchPad runs under the WebOS operating system which supports several things the iPad does not, support for Adobe Flash and true multitasking.

Under the covers, you'll find a a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 1.2-GHz processor, 16 or 32GB of storage, a front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth connectivity, Internal stereo speakers, light sensor, accelerometer, compass (magnetometer), gyroscope and a Micro USB port for charging and PC connectivity.

The Wi-Fi-only version of the TouchPad is slated for arrival this summer with the 3G versions released at a later date. The company did not announce pricing.
