So someone I know has recorded a program and wants to transfer it from their motorola DCT3416 PVR to PC someone informed me that this was possible via firewire I was able to track down the drivers to recognize the pvr on the pc. However, I do not know which software program is used to actually access the recordings that currently reside in the pvr to transfer it to the pc. Any ideas?

You need a program called CapDVHS which can save the data from the Firewire port into a MPEG2 type file on a PC. You can't directly access the saved programs, you can only record whatever is being output by the PVR. So to record a saved program, you would need to play it on the PVR and set CapDVHS to record it until the program finished playing. Also works with live TV.

The best way is with a Hauppage 1212. It uses the component output of the box and sends it to the PC by USB.

Please search the forum for Shaw firewire discussions - most are probably in the HTPC forum here and this topic has been discussed many times. But I believe that there are now issues with the 5C settings which preclude recording via firewire for many channels. The Hauppauge would be an option. Here's the FAQ on Recording HD which contains explanations and links:

One needs to be a real "geek" to get firewire working. The Hauppauge option requires slightly less geekiness.
