Canwest Broadcasting announced today that History Television HD will launch this Thursday, October 8th, exclusively on Shaw digital Cable.

History Television will be Canwest's third specialty channel to air in high definition. The others are Showcase and the National Geographic Channel.



The broadcaster says History Television HD will air over 100 hours per week of native HD content including 90% of its primetime programming. Shows in HD include such series as Ice Road Truckers, Battles BC, Life After People, Cities of the Underworld, Ultimate Engineering, Outlaw Bikers and the upcoming Canwest history series, Ice Pilots NWT. The station will also air movies such as Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, The Scorpion King and Braveheart in high def.

Beginning this week, History HD will only be available on Shaw digital cable. In a written statement, Canwest says it is currently in discussions with digital cable and satellite providers across Canada who they hope will pick up the service .

Shaw digital cable customers will be able to watch History HD on channel 231 as part of their Shaw HD Plus package.
