Found another board. This one is ATX so would need to switch cases. It also has HDMI and digital optical out without the use of the daughter card which is required on the asus board.

Very happy with my Biostar TF7050-M2 GF7050PC mATX mb so far.. HDMI out worked like a charm right off the bat and it plays 1080p VC1 and x264 downloads off the net at <40% with an AMD 4600+ x2. I installed the cheap chaintech card for optical out. Using an LCD 1080p display so I don't know about overscan issues. Will try plugging in the Xbox HDDVD drive sometime in the next week.

WD AAKS 500gb drive and Antec NSK2400 case are both very quiet.

Thanks jacksparrow. It's similar to the link you posted but the SMCWAA-G. Works great for streaming music from my upstairs PC over uPnP. I don"t want to have to turn the TV on to listen to my music collection.

I've solved the overscan/underscan issues now that I'm using HDMI instead of VGA. I managed to get 1:1 pixel mapping and the picture looks great. Highly recommend this mobo now that I've sorted out the problems I had.

Next up, I'm having a few problems with my wireless MS keyboard locking up occasionally. I'd like to remove the wired kb I have plugged in soon.

I'm running XP MCE and using TheaterTek via My Movies for my ripped DVD collection. Using Zoom Player for downloaded TV shows. Both are using ffdshow and make my DVDs look way better.

Updated HTPC:

Antec NSK2400 case
Seagate SATA II 320 GB drive
Crucial 1Gb Rendition PC2-5300 DDR2 ram *2
Pioneer DVD 212D sata DVD drive
AMD Athlon 64X2 4200+ processor
Asus M2A-VM / HDMI

$540 + taxes.

Pieces already bought or have:

Hauppauge 150 w/ IR blaster
Beyond TV 4

I have read FFDSHOW and theaterTek are excellent for DVD playback. FFDshow is free but theatertek is not.

I am not 100% sure what they do so if anyone can explain in more detail I would appreciate it.

You might want to check to make sure that ram is compatible with the mobo. I have heard people say the big name RAMs don't seem to want to work with the mobo

Your setup looks good though

jacksparrow,

Do you mean big names are not very compatible with the Asus M2A-VM / HDMI board?

Either way if it is not working they will switch it for another ram.

Just need to figure out the software side now.

IIRC, Crucial guarantees compatibility. Never had a problem with their RAM either. From what I've heard, PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) might have some issue with current motherboards but PC2-5300 (DDR2-667) is almost always Ok. The difference in speed is probably not worth the problems that the faster memory may cause. PC2-5300 is currently going for bargain prices ($40/GB) so it is certainly a "best buy".

Can anyone tell me if I will need a silver DVD player with the antec 2400 case?

I thought the front insert was attached and rotated up so it didn't matter what color dvd player I had but I don't think it works that way.

Black may look pretty good as well but I can't see beige or white.

I have a NSK2400 case and originally tried to cut the drive covers from the case to "stealth" the drive...see below
http://www.techtastic.ca/articles/stealthdrive.html
...but I messed it up and ended up spray painting my beige drive cover to match. I did not like the black drive in the silver case.

I used the painted drive for a bit then found a silver Pioneer drive at an on-line store (link not allowed, google DVR-112DSV). I am not sure if the SATA version is available in silver.
Edit: yes it is, try google, DVR-212DSV

dogbolter,

Thanks. For now I am not getting the black drive. I will look for the silver version.

Where is it selling for that price?

RAM Prices

I bought my Crucial RAM for $40/Gb at directcanada.com but since then it's been $35/Gb.

jacksparrow,

I looked at the fusion but didn't want to lose a 5.25" slot to the VFD. $80 more as well for things I didn't care about.

canadacomputers has 1GB sticks for $35
infonec has them for $40

mediaportal looks like it is a media center software which is not what I am looking for. I am looking for software options to work with Beyond TV and DVD playback etc.

NCIX had a limited quantity of 1 GB DDR2 RAM for $30 last week. They are all gone now but they may have more this Thursday.

FWIW, when putting together a system, I shop for sale items at NCIX and price match the rest with Canada Computers and other sites. NCIX also has free ground shipping every few weeks. That can save a bundle on shipping the case.

I wanted it built for me so I had a few less choices.

This is what is being built:

Antec NSK2400
M2A-VM HDMI
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (65w) CPU
Seagate 500 GB drive sata II
Crucial 1Gb *2 PC2-5300 Rendition DDR2 ram

$542 w/o taxes

I need to get Silver DVD drive still.
Install Hauppauge 150 card and Beyond TV4 software.

Not sure what other software I need.

Thanks for all the help and recommendations.
