more for movies with a netbook but could be in this category (laptop gaming).

Tried to watch some movies while traveling in a couple different turboprops but even using the earbuds with the silicone caps, volume from a Asus netbook was too low (levels okay with same earbuds and a iPod nano).

Quick search found a couple amps but rather expensive (here and here) any suggestion from personal experience for something cheaper (max say $50) that work.

More sensitive headphones may be all that is required. Better models of headphones usually have sensitivity listed in the specs. You should be able to get some good headphones in the $20-$40 range.

das75 there are several on dealextreme to choose from... the Fiio E5 is one that gets good reviews for a little under $20 with free shipping. I've bought from dealextreme several times before and it is a legit store.

peth, do you have a link?

scarybob, was thinking that but with the iPod at middle way sound's loud enough. Believe the little netbook just doesn't have the jam.
I did an ebay search but didnt find the same model. Search DAC and go from there. The Fiio one linked above looks like the ticket for the airplane where I have the same volume complaints watching movies on my Asus netbook

Received mine Monday, and it seems to work reasonably well. Output is definitely louder, and I do notice a slight sound quality difference on my Omnia II phone (for the better).

There is a slight hiss when nothing is playing, but otherwise it's OK. For $20 and something so easily pocketable, I definitely can't complain.

got mine as well.

Yes, bit of hiss between songs with a iPod but not much more than with the ear-bubs directly to the Nano, maybe a little flatter no matter where I have the EQ switch.

Seems well built with the metal case. Totally acceptable, specially considering less than 20 bucks. Thanks DJDiggler!
