I have an older TV, but I want to watch HD channels and NFLST. Will my TV display the HD channels if I get an HDPVR or do I have to have an HDTV? I know they obviously won't be in HD, but I want to see them for the content (mainly HDNet and NFLST).

Even if I set the PVR to 480i output?

I've connected a 6416 to a tube TV using component cables. If you're doing that, you probably have to set the output to 480i.

You'll see the full guide and can record SD or HD channels, depending on the packages you have ordered. You can play them back on a tube TV using any of the connections in order of preference HDMI, component, S-Video, composite.

Any HD channels you record will be down-converted on playback when using a 480i connection. If you have a standard "square" 4:3 tube TV you will see black bars on the top and bottom of the HD channels.

I was just going to connect the PVR via coax. I want to make sure there won't be any problems with recording or viewing all the channels. I don't care about the HD picture, SD is fine.

I don't think most HD PVRs have coax-out. Do you have any other inputs on your TV, such as Composite (Yellow video with Red/White audio RCA cables)?

Motorola's website shows the DCX 3400 with a coax-out.

Most TVs would have composite (yellow) or S-video inputs and it will work, along with analogue audio. See the following FAQ on Cables & Connections.

On many of the PVRs (depending on make/model) the RF-coax connection is hidden behind the silver box. RF-coax is the worst connection - poor PQ and mono sound, as indicated in the FAQ.

I am currently, and temporarily, running the coax output from a DCX3400 into an ancient tube TV. Everything (channels, Guide (including channels 200+), recorded programs, etc.) works. As usual in such setups, the TV is tuned to channel 3.

With RF bypass turned on, the channel last viewed on the DCX3400 remains viewable on the TV even with the DCX3400 turned off.

Of course, any other connection that your TV has will give better quality.

Apparently I had some older information. The new dcx3400 automatically calibrates to a 480 resolution so the guide displays on the HD channels.
