My 1 year old 1tb western digital black hard drive seems to be working all the time. Even when the PC is doing nothing at all it seems to be doing stuff. Here is the odd thing. While the PC is doing "nothing" the hard drive light does not light up, but soon as I access the disk my self the light comes on.
No its not just a spinning sound I am hearing, its clearly going back and forth doing something.
I have had no errors, performace issues or anything. System is spyware, malware and virus free.

Any clues ?

Bob, your link does not work, and when I did a google search for it and downloaded and installed it the program would not work.

Other ideas or scanning program suggestions?

Link fixed. Make sure you get the correct version. There are lots of links to versions for other operating systems. Note that GSmartControl is non-destructive. It simply accesses the SMART interface on the drive to read status information and perform tests. However, backups are always a good idea to prevent data loss in case of drive failure.

Windows: Installer (gsmartcontrol-0.8.5-4.exe)

If you are running Windows 7 check to see if the indexer service is running. It is supposed to run low priority and during system idle to index new files as they are created. But I've had it get confused and re-index my libraries. Which on a terabyte drive is enormous.

Indexing or virus scanning is the first thing I thought about. The OP says the drive light if staying off though.

You could also use WD diagnostic to check your drive. You will anyway need the error code from the diagnostic tool if replacement of the hd is required.
Best to make backup before running any of these software on your HD

I hope you have it fully backed up
Backed up to two different external hard drives, my laptop, dvd and an off site back up. I am really paranoid about data loss so that part is covered. I will try some of your guys suggestions. I have run the windows check disk and no errors reported.

Ok, I have run the WD utility and the gsmart control.
All tests passed, no errors or problems.
So it seems the drive is physically fine.

I have turned off everything that happens automatically, virus updates/scans, windows updates and installs. I have turned off indexing as well. Of course you would think any of these tasks would light up the hard drive light.

Will continue to monitor and slowly turn things back on to see what the problem may be.

Well, I think I tracked it down to indexing. Turning it on seems to make the hard drive slowly work. Odd though why it would not light of the hard drive activity light. At least the hard drive it self is healthy.
Thanks to everyone for their help.
